Objectives: We estimated influenza-like symptom (ILS) incidence among healthcare personnel (HCP) in four hospitals and the economic impact due to ILS in the Thai HCP population during July 2020-June 2021 (Thailand's expected 2020 influenza season), which also coincided with the novel coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Methods: We followed HCP, in a prospective observational cohort, weekly for ≥1 of: muscle pain, cough, runny nose/nasal congestion, sore throat, or difficulty breathing. We fitted population-averaged Poisson regression models to identify factors associated with acquiring ILS and to calculate ILS incidence. We applied epidemiologic parameters to Thailand's HCP population (227 349 persons) to estimate economic impact.

Results: Of 2184 participants, adjusted all-cause ILS incidence was 6.1 episodes per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 3.4-10.9). Among Thailand's HCP population, 13 909 ILS episodes were estimated to occur annually and would result in US$235 135 economic loss. Controlling for study site and calendar month, factors associated with acquiring ≥1 ILS versus no ILS included being female, having asthma, and using personal protective equipment 'frequently, but not always'.

Conclusions: All-cause ILS resulted in considerable economic loss among Thai HCP workforce. These findings underscore the importance of public health interventions to reduce the risk of acquiring ILS.

Objective: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a benign inflammatory condition predominantly affecting women of reproductive age, particularly those with a history of breastfeeding. Although the precise etiology remains unknown, treatment strategies continue to be a subject of debate. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of intralesional steroid (ILS) injections with oral steroid (OS) therapy in managing IGM.

In this study, a frustum-shaped addition was made to a cylindrical absorber unit, utilizing 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ionic liquid (IL) to create a transparent all-dielectric liquid metamaterial absorber (A-D ILMMA). The A-D ILMMA achieved over 90% absorption efficiency across 4.86-50.

Tackling water contamination by oncologic drugs: Supported ionic liquids as sustainable adsorbents for cyclophosphamide removal.

J Environ Manage

CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, Department of Chemistry, University of Aveiro, 3810-193, Aveiro, Portugal. Electronic address:

Due to the increasing incidence of cancer, the consumption of highly toxic oncological drugs is continuously growing. Given the current lack of efficient technologies to remove/treat these toxic drugs in wastewater treatment plants, the environmental quality is compromised, and aquatic organisms are at risk. To address this critical environmental burden, a new strategy based on supported ionic liquids (SILs) for the simultaneous removal of oncologic drugs and toxicity reduction of aqueous samples is here proposed.

Background: We examined the added value of serologic testing for estimating influenza virus infection incidence based on illness surveillance with molecular testing versus periodic serologic testing.

Methods: Pregnant persons unvaccinated against influenza at <28 weeks gestation were enrolled before the 2017 and 2018 influenza seasons in Peru and Thailand. Blood specimens were collected at enrollment and ≤14 days postpartum for testing by hemagglutination inhibition assay for antibodies against influenza reference viruses.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous research has connected personality traits, loneliness, and problematic internet use (PIU) to adolescent depression, but their exact relationships were unclear.
  • A study involving 2,476 adolescents used various psychological tests to investigate how personality traits impact depression through loneliness and PIU.
  • Findings revealed that certain personality traits directly influence depression, with loneliness and PIU playing significant mediating roles, highlighting the importance of addressing these factors to reduce depression in teens.*
