Spectroscopy in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength range is a key technique to detect and identify chemical and biological substances. In this context, the development of integrated optics systems paves the way for the realization of compact and cost-effective sensing systems. Among the required devices, an integrated electro-optical modulator (EOM) is a key element for advanced sensing circuits exploiting dual comb spectroscopy. In this paper, we have experimentally demonstrated an integrated EOM operating in a wide wavelength range, i.e. from 5 to 9 µm at radio frequency (RF) as high as 1 GHz. The modulator exploits the variation of free carrier absorption in a Schottky diode embedded in a graded silicon germanium (SiGe) photonic waveguide.

Spatially selective imaging (SSI) involves sampling a group of pixels from different positions on an encoded object to display a decoded image. Here, SSI is achieved by using off-axis cylindrical Fresnel lens arrays to decode multiple images from an encoded print of structural color pixels. Each image is optically retrieved by separately placing different "keys" (arrays of lenses in different pseudorandom configurations) over the same encoded print, and then each image is digitally reconstructed for visualization.

Talbot length, the distance between two consecutive self-image planes along the propagation axis for a periodic diffraction object (grating) illuminated by a plane wave, depends on the period of the object and the wavelength of illumination. This property makes the Talbot effect a straightforward technique for measuring the period of a periodic object (grating) by accurately determining the Talbot length for a given illumination wavelength. However, since the Talbot length scale is proportional to the square of the grating period, traditional Talbot techniques face challenges when dealing with smaller grating periods and minor changes in the grating period.

Wave ripples can provide valuable information on their formative hydrodynamic conditions in past subaqueous environments by inverting dimension predictors. However, these inversions do not usually take the mixed non-cohesive/cohesive nature of sediment beds into account. Recent experiments involving sand-kaolinite mixtures have demonstrated that wave-ripple dimensions and the threshold of motion are affected by bed clay content.
