In the present study, the seasonal variability of the in vitro ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), total phenols, and terpene hydrocarbon content in 70% ethanol extracts were evaluated. The samples of crushed (CBs) and non-crushed ripe juniper berries (NCBs) collected at five localities in North-East Slovakia during the years 2012-2014 were compared. The method of preparation of the extract influenced the amount of dry matter (DM) in the extracts. In the CB extracts were statistically higher contents of DM (from 13.91 ± 0.11 g·L to 23.84 ± 0.14 g·L) compared to NCB extracts (from 1.39 ± 0.01 g·L to 16.55 ± 0.09 g·L). The differences in antioxidant activity between the investigated localities were statistically significant for both types of extract. For example, in 2013 in the locality of Zbojné, the FRAP in NCBs was 76.62 µmol·L·g DM and in CBs was 138.27 µmol·L·g DM, while in the Miľpoš locality, in NCBs there was 232.66 µmol·L·g DM and in CBs there was 1178.98 µmol·L·g DM. The differences in the antioxidant activity between the studied years in the case of NCB extracts were not statistically significant. In the case of CB extracts, significant differences between the evaluated years were found. Statistics by ANOVA confirmed that CB extracts prepared from berries in the year 2013 showed significantly higher activity compared to CB extracts from berries from the years 2012 and 2014. Based on the Pearson we found a negative correlation coefficient between the FRAP assay and the content of total polyphenols in NCB extracts (-0.531 in 2012; -0.349 in 2013; and -0.224 in 2014). In contrast, CB extracts showed a positive correlation coefficient (0.843 in 2012; 0.742 in 2013; 0.617 in 2014).

Geographical distribution of the Cryptococcus gattii species complex: a systematic review.

Lancet Microbe

December 2024

Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, University of Kansas, Kansas City, KS, USA; Division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA.

The taxonomy of the Cryptococcus gattii species complex continues to evolve, and has been divided into five pathogenic species. The objective of this systematic review was to summarise the geographical distribution of the C gattii species complex and the species within the C gattii species complex. We searched PubMed for articles related to human, animal, ecological, or laboratory-based studies of C gattii species complex isolates with traceable geographical origin published from January, 1970, until September, 2021.

Analysis of effects and factors linked to soil microbial populations and nitrogen cycling under long-term biosolids application.

Sci Total Environ

July 2024

Monitoring and Research Department, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, 6001 West Pershing Road, Cicero, IL 60804, USA.

Information about impacts of long-term biosolids application on soil microbial populations and functional groups and N cycling is important for evaluating soil health and agroecosystem sustainability under long-term biosolids application. Mine spoil plots received annual biosolids application from 1973 to 2010 at low (16.8 Mg ha yr), medium (33.

Background And Objectives: A sizable literature has studied neuropsychologic function in persons with migraine (PwM), but despite this, few quantitative syntheses exist. These focused on circumscribed areas of the literature. In this study, we conducted an expanded comprehensive meta-analysis comparing performance on clinical measures of neuropsychological function both within and across domains, between samples of PwM and healthy controls (HCs).

(Lauraceae) plant is used in the traditional system of medicine and is considered a potential source of edible fruits, spices, flavoring agents and biodiesel. The leaves, bark and roots of the species are used by local communities for the treatment of inflammatory responses, such as allergies, sinusitis and urinary tract infections. However, there is no scientific evidence to support the molecular mechanism through which this plant exerts its anti-inflammatory effect.
