Zirconium oxide (ZrO) nanoparticles were introduced onto cellulose nanofibers after being covalently functionalized with mercaptoacetic acid. We experimentally demonstrate that the nanocomposite is capable of selectively capturing Hg(ii) from aqueous samples down to trace level concentrations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that energetically favorable R-S → Hg ← O-R bidentate complex formation enhances the rapid adsorption, leading to selective extraction of Hg(ii). Furthermore, the loss of ZrO particles during flow-through studies is controlled and restricted after binding to CNF rather than being used directly in the column. The Hg(ii) selectivity is primarily due to the Lewis soft-soft acid-base chelation of Hg(ii) with the mercapto functionalities of the adsorbent. The experimental observations depict a high sorption capacity of 280.5 mg g for Hg(ii). The limit of detection and quantification of the proposed approach were found to be 0.04 μg L and 0.15 μg L, respectively. Analytical method accuracy and validity were determined by analyzing Standard Reference Materials and by the standard addition method (recovery > 95% with a 5% RSD). The findings of a Student's -test were found to be lower than the critical Student's value. Real water samples were successfully analyzed using the developed procedure.

Direct preparation of silver nanoclusters is of great significance for their applications. In this work, by selecting sodium cyanoborohydride as a weak reducing agent to control the kinetics of the reduction reaction, we successfully prepared silver nanoclusters protected by thiol-containing ligands, including mercaptosuccinic acid, cysteine, and glutathione. Based on the silver nanoclusters protected by mercaptosuccinic acid, silver-gold alloy nanoclusters were obtained through a gold doping reaction.

The immune system is essential for the defense against infections and is critically implicated in various disorders, including immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, inflammation and cancer. The current study includes a new design of palmitoylated derivatives of thioglycolic acids (PTGAs) capable of triggering innate immune responses. The new series were accessible through a three-step synthetic route, including N-palmitoylation, Claisen-Schmidt condensation and thia-Michael addition.

Given the crucial role of thiols in maintaining normal physiological functions, it is essential to establish a high-throughput and sensitive analytical method to identify and quantify various thiols accurately. Inspired by the iron porphyrin active center of natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP), we designed and synthesized two iron porphyrin covalent organic frameworks (Fe-COF-H and Fe-COF-OH) with notable peroxidase-like (POD) activity, capable of catalyzing 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into oxidized TMB with three distinct absorption peaks. Based on these, a six-channel nanozyme colorimetric sensor array was constructed, which could map the specific fingerprints of various thiols.

Simultaneous assessment of agrochemical residues in agricultural entities is crucial for ensuring food safety and protecting consumer health. A highly sensitive and stable thioglycolic acid (TGA) based surface modified coreshell nanorod (Au@Ag@TGANR) arrays were developed for simultaneous fungicide detection in peach samples. The developed Au@Ag@TGANRs exhibited superior surface enhance Raman scattering (SERS) performance, enabling the simultaneous examination of ziram (ZIR) and thiabendazole (TBZ) residues in peach samples with detection limits as low as 0.
