Histoplasmosis, caused by the fungus , is a significant public health concern in endemic regions like Mexico. Immunocompromised individuals, especially those with HIV infection and those exposed to nitrogen-rich environments, such as bird excrement or bat guano, are particularly vulnerable. This case report describes a middle-aged patient with jaundice in the skin and mucous membranes.

Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy for bladder cancer rarely leads to disseminated BCG infections, most of which occur early after BCG instillations or in immunocompromised patients. We report late-onset disseminated BCG infection after intravesical BCG immunotherapy in a non-immunocompromised patient. A 78-year-old non-immunocompromised man was admitted with fever and hepatosplenomegaly.

Background: According to the WHO's recommendation for developing countries, Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination has been implemented in some countries as part of national vaccination programs at birth. Although it is generally considered safe, some complications may occur; including BCGitis (local) or BCGosis (systemic), ranging from mild like local abscesses to fatal impediments like osteomyelitis and disseminated BCG infection. This study aimed to determine the spectrum of inborn errors of immunity (IEI) in BCG-vaccinated neonates experiencing local or systemic complications.

Objective: To describe the complications and risks associated with BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccination in patients diagnosed with SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency).

Methods: This is a descriptive case series study. Medical charts were retrospectively reviewed for demographics, clinical manifestation, laboratory findings at diagnosis, outcome, and diagnosis of BCG vaccine-associated complications.

Does the herbicide napropamide exhibit enantioselective effects across genus plasmid transfer from Escherichia coli to Bacillus subtilis?

J Hazard Mater

November 2024

Key Laboratory of Pollution Exposure and Health Intervention of Zhejiang Province, Interdisciplinary Research Academy (IRA), Zhejiang Shuren University, Hangzhou 310015, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study highlights the urgent issue of antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) spread in the environment, focusing on the impact of the herbicide napropamide (NAP) on plasmid transfer between bacteria.
  • - It found that R-NAP significantly enhances plasmid transfer efficiency from E. coli to Bacillus subtilis compared to its S-enantiomer, particularly at a concentration of 5 mg/L, while also affecting bacterial structures and increasing membrane permeability.
  • - The research identifies specific genes involved in this transfer and suggests that careful management of herbicides like R-NAP is necessary in agricultural settings to prevent the spread of ARGs, particularly in fields treated with livestock manure.
