A sample of healthy unrelated individuals was typed for properdin factor B (Bf) polymorphism in four Sardinian villages. Two villages, Desulo and Tonara, are located in the highlands; the other two, Orosei and Galtellì, are located in the lowlands. No heterogeneity was found between the highland and the lowland villages, whereas a significant difference was found between the Sardinian villages and continental Italy. The allele Bf-F1 shows the highest gene frequency so far observed. Typically Sardinian is the gametic association (haplotype) HLA-A30, Cw5, B18, BfF1, DR3.

Villages in the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean that display exceptional longevity are clustered within a defined mountainous region. Because of their unique location we hypothesize that these villages had a unique infectious disease exposure relevant to the observed successful longevity. These highland villages had a significant exposure to malaria in the first half of the 20th century after which malaria was eliminated due to vector control mechanisms.

GlobalFiler is a new PCR amplification kit that includes 21 autosomal short tandem repeats and three sex-determining loci. In the present research, for the first time, the GlobalFiler kit was tested to analyze a sample of 500 unrelated individuals from 18 villages encompassing the entire area of Sardinia (Italy). We tested if the kit, which is a powerful tool in forensic studies, may also find application in the field of population genetics.

Composition and origin of PM in Mediterranean Countryside.

Environ Pollut

March 2019

Department of Scienze Chimiche e Geologiche, Università di Cagliari and INSTM, Cittadella Universitaria di Monserrato, 09042, Monserrato, Cagliari, Italy.

In this work PM was collected during winter and summer in a Sardinian village (Gonnostramatza, Italy) highly affected by biomass burning emissions. A multi-technique approach was adopted for the complete PM chemical characterization. The bulk characterization was performed by IC (Ion Chromatography), HPAEC (High-Performance Anion-Exchange Chromatography), TOT (Thermal Optical Transmittance) and ED-XRF (Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence) while XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) was used for the surface characterization.
