The groundwater polluted by an agricultural hormone site was taken as the research object, and a total of 7 groundwater samples were collected at different locations in the plant. The main pollutants in the research area were determined to be extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (C-C); 1,2-dichloroethane; 1,1,2-trichloroethane; carbon tetrachloride; vinyl chloride, and chloroform; the maximum content of these pollutants can reach 271 mg/L, 1.68 × 10 µg/L, 1.56 × 10 µg/L, 9.53 × 10 µg/L, 6.58 × 10 µg/L, and 4.81 × 10 µg/L, respectively. Aiming at the problems of groundwater pollution in this area, two sets of oxidation experiments have been carried out. The addition of NaHSO modified Fenton oxidation system was used in this contaminated water, which enhanced (2.2 ~ 46.7%) chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate. The highest removal rate of extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (C-C) can reach 99%. And the degradation rate of chlorinated hydrocarbon pollutants can reach 99% to 100%, which almost achieved the purpose of complete removal. In the NaHSO modified Fenton oxidation system, the addition of NaHSO accelerates the cycle of Fe/Fe and ensures the continuous existence of Fe in the reaction system, thereby producing more ·OH and further oxidizing and degrading organic pollutants. Our work has provided important insights for this economically important treatment of this type water body and laid the foundation for the engineering of this method.

Theoretical Study of Antioxidant and Prooxidant Potency of Protocatechuic Aldehyde.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Institute for Information Technologies Kragujevac, Department of Science, University of Kragujevac, Jovana Cvijića bb, 34000 Kragujevac, Serbia.

In this study, the antioxidant and prooxidant potency of protocatechuic aldehyde (PCA) was evaluated using density functional theory (DFT). The potency of direct scavenging of hydroperoxyl (HOO) and lipid peroxyl radicals (modeled by vinyl peroxyl, HC=CHOO) involved in lipid peroxidation was estimated. The repair of oxidative damage in biomolecules (lipids, proteins and nucleic acids) and the prooxidant ability of PCA phenoxyl radicals were considered.

The development of efficient and sustainable photocatalysts for wastewater treatment remains a critical challenge in environmental remediation. In this study, a ternary photocatalyst, Cu-CuO/g-CN, was synthesized by embedding copper-copper oxide heterostructural nanocrystals onto g-CN nanosheets via a simple deposition method. Structural and optical characterization confirmed the successful formation of the heterostructure, which combines the narrow bandgap of CuO, the high stability of g-CN, and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Cu nanoparticles.

Hypoxia, a phenomenon that occurs when the oxygen level in tissues is lower than average, is commonly observed in human solid tumors. For oncological treatment, the hypoxic environment often results in radioresistance and chemoresistance. In this study, a new multifunctional oxygen carrier, carboxymethyl hexanoyl chitosan (CHC) nanodroplets decorated with perfluorohexane (PFH) and superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanodroplets (SPIO@PFH-CHC), was developed and investigated.

Ni(II)-hydrazineylpyridine (Ni(II)-PyH)-catalyzed regioselective synthesis of α-benzyl substituted β-hydroxy ketones from α,β-unsaturated ketones and alcohols is reported a Fenton free-radical reaction. This protocol enables facile access to desired products in good to excellent yields in 12 h using toluene solvent at room temperature to 100 °C. The structural analysis of the products was confirmed by H, C-NMR, GC-MS, and HRMS data.

Herein, a biochar-supported zero-valent iron (ZVI) nanosheet catalyst (Fe@BC) for the activation of persulfate to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP) was prepared using industrial kraft lignin and Fenton sludge as carbon and iron sources, respectively. Fe@BC showed considerably better CIP degradation efficiency (96.9% at 20 mg·L) than traditional catalysts.
