The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected migrant farmworker communities in the United States in case rates and deaths. In rural Immokalee, Florida, human rights, health care, and social support organizations with different strengths joined together to form a coalition that provided health information, tests, vaccines, and social supports. This report offers practical advice on how similar coalitions can overcome barriers to care, improve outcomes, and overall increase trust in the health system.

There is a critical need to generate age- and sex-specific survival curves to characterize chronological aging consistently across nonhuman primates (NHP) used in biomedical research. Sex-specific Kaplan-Meier survival curves were computed in 12 translational aging models: baboon, bonnet macaque, chimpanzee, common marmoset, coppery titi monkey, cotton-top tamarin, cynomolgus macaque, Japanese macaque, pigtail macaque, rhesus macaque, squirrel monkey, and vervet/African green. After employing strict inclusion criteria, primary results are based on 12,269 NHPs that survived to adulthood and died of natural/health-related causes.

Biocrusts, common in natural ecosystems, are specific assemblages of microorganisms at or on the soil surface with associated microorganisms extending into the top centimeter of soil. Agroecosystem biocrusts have similar rates of nitrogen (N) fixation as those in natural ecosystems, but it is unclear how agricultural management influences their composition and function. This study examined the total bacterial and diazotrophic communities of biocrusts in a citrus orchard and a vineyard that shared a similar climate and soil type but differed in management.

Pre-plant soil fumigation is widely applied to control nematodes, soil-borne fungal pathogens, and weeds in vegetable crops. However, most of the research evaluating the effect of fumigants on crop yield and soil microbial communities has been done on single compounds despite growers mainly applying fumigant combinations. We studied the effect of different fumigant combinations (chloropicrin, 1,3-dichloropropene, and metam potassium) on soil properties, crop yield, and the soil bacterial and fungal microbiome for two consecutive years in a plastic-mulched tomato production system in Florida (United States).

The US Government Principles for the use of animals in research are a landmark statement of ethical values and guidance for the biomedical research community. However, when The Principles were introduced, a context was not provided for their source or foundation. The US Government Principles were formulated with input from the Council of Europe, World Health Organization, and US Interagency Research Animal Committee.
