This study presents a practical computer-based design program for a power cable network called "Power Cables Graphical User Interface" (PCGUI). This program is mainly for academic education, consulting electrical designers, primary engineers, and technical personnel with open-source code and a simple user interface. As a low/medium-voltage cable selection program, PCGUI will represent an essential part of the design for any electrical system, including different and complex analytic procedures based on various international standards ("IEEE, IEC, BS, NEC, NPFA 70, and local applied country standards."). A MATLAB PCGUI program gives a new method to analyze and identify the optimized cable design depending on huge numbers of MATLAB script files and data appropriate for different factors and conditions. These factors and conditions include the type of insulation, temperature factor, grouping factor, accepted voltage drop, cable lifetime costs, etc. PCGUI is easily accomplished with the least effort and provides a fast and economical design with very high accuracy through limited manual input steps. After executing the program, the obtained results will contain the complete economic cable design, the circuit breaker standard rating and type, the actual cable current loading, the actual voltage drop, and the primary and the most economic cable cross-section area "CSA" based on the cost analysis.

Study on Long-Term Temperature Variation Characteristics of Concrete Bridge Tower Cracks Based on Deep Learning.

Sensors (Basel)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Concrete and Pre-Stressed Concrete Structures of the Ministry of Education, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, China.

Monitoring existing cracks is a critical component of structural health monitoring in bridges, as temperature fluctuations significantly influence crack development. The study of the Huai'an Bridge indicated that concrete cracks predominantly occur near the central tower, primarily due to temperature variations between the inner and outer surfaces. This research aims to develop a deep learning model utilizing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks to predict crack depth based on the thermal variations experienced by the main tower.

Bridge expansion joints are critical components that accommodate the movement of a bridge caused by temperature fluctuations, concrete shrinkage, and vehicular loads. Analyzing the spatiotemporal deformation of these expansion joints is essential for monitoring bridge safety. This study investigates the deformation characteristics of Hongtang Bridge in Fuzhou, China, using synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR).

In accordance with German guideline ZTV-ING Part 4, full-locked coil ropes are provided with a three-layer corrosion protection coating based on epoxy resin and polyurethane, which must be renewed regularly. An alternative method is to use a coating of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is extruded onto the rope. In this article, the mechanical behavior of the thermoplastic material is studied, taking into account various accelerated aging processes, which are derived from the climatic boundary conditions of a real bridge structure and implemented in tests.

Effects of Polyol Types on Underwater Curing Properties of Polyurethane.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

CNBM Zhongyan Technology Co., Ltd., Beijing 100024, China.

This study aims to develop castable polyurethane suitable for applications on wet substrates or underwater construction. Polyurethanes were synthesized using various polyols with similar hydroxyl values, including poly(tetrahydrofuran) polyol, polyester polyol, castor oil-modified polyol, soybean oil-modified polyol, and cashew nut shell oil-modified polyol. The corresponding polyurethane curing products were evaluated for their underwater curing characteristics by volume expansion ratios and adhesion strength on dry and wet substrates, combined with analyses of reaction exothermic behavior, wetting properties on dry and wet substrates, interfacial tension, and microstructure characterization from the perspectives of reaction activity and water solubility.
