Radiologic aspects of lunatomalacia.

A radiological classification of lunatomalacia, based upon the chronological radiologic manifestations in 93 patients is presented. Compression fractures were not seen as the initial event. Fifty-seven per cent of the patients had a short ulna (ulna minus variant). The presence of ulna minus variant was especially observed in the younger patients. In 16 patients suffering from a lunate fracture and in 20 patients with lunate or perilunate luxations, lunatomalacia did not develop. Immobilization as treatment of the disorder resulted in a progressive course in all patients, but one, an 8-year-old girl. The lesion of the lunate was arrested and tended to heal following radial osteotomy in all patients.

Background: In 2016, a new method was described to treat the painful impingement syndrome of the DRUJ: decompression corrective osteotomy of the distal radius. Clinical symptoms are based on a positive compression test; pain occurs with weight-bearing on the forearm. This phenomenon is seen in conjunction with a deformed sigmoid notch together with ulna minus-variance, which leads to increased tension in the distal oblique bundle of the interosseous membrane.

Background: Concomitant injuries to the radiocarpal ligaments may occur during episodes of distal radius fractures, which may not cause acute subluxation or dislocation but can lead to radiocarpal instability and progress over time. This study aimed to analyze the occurrence of ulnar carpal translation (UCT) after open reduction and internal fixation of distal radius fractures and evaluate the associated factors of UCT.

Methods: The retrospective study has been done now and includes patients treated between 2010 and 2020 who had undergone reduction and locking plate fixation of distal radius fractures.
