Two-dimensional nanomaterials, as one of the most widely used substrates for energy storage devices, have achieved great success in terms of the overall capacity. Despite the extensive research effort dedicated to this field, there are still major challenges concerning capacitance modulation and stability of the 2D materials that need to be overcome. Doping of the crystal structures, pillaring methods and 3D structuring of electrodes have been proposed to improve the material properties. However, these strategies are usually accompanied by a significant increase in the cost of the entire material preparation process and also a lack of the versatility for modification of the various types of the chemical structures. Hence in this work, versatile, cheap, and environmentally friendly method for the enhancement of the electrochemical parameter of various MXene-based supercapacitors (Ti C , Nb C, and V C), coated with functional and charged organic molecules (zwitterions-ZW) is introduced. The MXene-organic hybrid strategy significantly increases the ionic absorption (capacitance boost) and also forms a passivation layer on the oxidation-prone surface of the MXene through the covalent bonds. Therefore, this work demonstrates a new, cost-effective, and versatile approach (MXene-organic hybrid strategy) for the design and fabrication of hybrid MXene-base electrode materials for energy storage/conversion systems.

Squaraine dye/TiCT MXene organic-inorganic hybrids for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

J Colloid Interface Sci

March 2023

Department of Medical Bioscience, Faculty of Bioscience, Nagahama Institute of Bio-Science and Technology, Nagahama, Shiga 526-0829, Japan. Electronic address:

MXenes, a new family of 2D nanostructured materials, have been widely studied in the field of artificial photosynthesis due to their outstanding physicochemical properties. In this work, a series of 2,4-bis[4-(N,N-dibutylamino)phenyl] squaraine (SQ) derivatives with different number of hydroxyl groups were hybridized with TiCT MXene nanosheets, and the organic-inorganic hybrid photocatalysts were applied for water-splitting hydrogen evolution. The mass ratios of SQ@TiCT were optimized to 4 wt% for each SQ, and the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rate of 28.

Thermal Stability and Flammability Studies of MXene-Organic Hybrid Polystyrene Nanocomposites.

Polymers (Basel)

Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843, USA.

Polystyrene (PS) is widely used in the plastics industry, but the application range of PS is limited due to its inherently high flammability. A variety of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have been reported to impart excellent flame retardancy to polymeric materials. In this study, a 2D nanomaterial MXene-organic hybrid (O-TiC) was applied to PS as a nanofiller.

Two-Dimensional MXene-Polymer Heterostructure with Ordered In-Plane Mesochannels for High-Performance Capacitive Deionization.

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Frontiers Science Center for Transformative Molecules, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Electrical Insulation and Thermal Ageing, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 800 Dongchuan Road, Shanghai, 200240, China.

The application of traditional electrode materials for high-performance capacitive deionization (CDI) has been persistently limited by their low charge-storage capacities, excessive co-ion expulsion and slow salt removal rates. Here we report a bottom-up approach to the preparation of a two-dimensional (2D) Ti C T MXene-polydopamine heterostructure having ordered in-plane mesochannels (denoted as mPDA/MXene). Interfacial self-assembly of mesoporous polydopamine (mPDA) monolayers on MXene nanosheets leads to the mPDA/MXene heterostructure, which exhibits several unique features: (1) MXene undergoes reversible ion intercalation/deintercalation and possesses high conductivity; (2) mPDA layers establish redox capacitive characteristics and Na selectivity, and also help to prevent self-stacking and oxidation of MXene; (3) in-plane mesochannels enable the smooth transport of ions at the internal spaces of this stacked 2D material.

Recent Advanced on the MXene-Organic Hybrids: Design, Synthesis, and Their Applications.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

With increasing research interest in the field of flexible electronics and wearable devices, intensive efforts have been paid to the development of novel inorganic-organic hybrid materials. As a newly developed two-dimensional (2D) material family, MXenes present many advantages compared with other 2D analogs, especially the variable surface terminal groups, thus the infinite possibility for the regulation of surface physicochemical properties. However, there is still less attention paid to the interfacial compatibility of the MXene-organic hybrids.
