Objective: To explore associations of maternal insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction with offspring overweight before 24 months of age among children of Chinese women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Methods: Offspring of women with GDM (n = 901) who were enrolled in a lifestyle trial during pregnancy were followed up to 24 months of age in Tianjin, China. Restricted cubic spline analysis was performed to examine full-range associations of maternal homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and β-cell function (HOMA-%β) with childhood overweight. Logistic regression was performed to obtain the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of maternal high HOMA-IR and low HOMA-%β at diagnosis of GDM for offspring overweight within 12 months of age and at 13-24 months of age.
Results: Maternal high HOMA-IR was associated with an increased risk of offspring being overweight within 12 months of age and at 13-24 months of age (OR: 1.71, 95%CI: 1.12-2.62 & 1.89, 1.13-3.17, respectively). Maternal low HOMA-%β was associated with an increased risk of offspring being overweight at 13-24 months of age (1.64, 1.05-2.55).
Conclusions: Both maternal increased insulin resistance and decreased β-cell function at diagnosis of GDM were associated with elevated risk of offspring overweight in early childhood among Chinese women with GDM.

Objectives: Investigate associations of different family healthy lifestyle scores (HLS) during the first 1000 days with childhood overweight and obesity (OWOB).
Methods: Cohort-specific analyses were conducted on participants (n = 25 006) from 4 European birth cohorts (The study on the pre- and early postnatal determinants of child health and development [EDEN], Elfe, France; Generation R, the Netherlands; and Lifeways, Ireland). Three composite HLSs were calculated: a maternal pregnancy HLS based on prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and diet quality, physical activity, smoking status, and alcohol consumption during pregnancy; a parental pregnancy HLS additionally considering paternal BMI and smoking status; and an infancy HLS based on breastfeeding duration, age of solid food introduction, and exposure to passive smoking.

Background And Aims: Maternal obesity increases the risk of the paediatric form of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), affecting up to 30% of youth, but the developmental origins remain poorly understood.
Methods: Using a Japanese macaque model, we investigated the impact of maternal Western-style diet (mWSD) or chow diet followed by postweaning WSD (pwWSD) or chow diet focusing on bile acid (BA) homeostasis and hepatic fibrosis in livers from third-trimester fetuses and 3-year-old juvenile offspring.
Results: Juveniles exposed to mWSD had increased hepatic collagen I/III content and stellate cell activation in portal regions.

In addition to biological factors, maternal exposures during pregnancy can contribute to leukemogenesis in offspring. We conducted a population-based cohort study in Sweden to investigate the association between risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in offspring and maternal anthropometrics during pregnancy. A total of 2,961,435 live-born singletons during 1983-2018 were followed from birth to ALL diagnosis, end of age 18, or end of 2018.

Just as overweight and obesity may impair immunity, excessive body weight-related parameters of women in the pre-conception period and during pregnancy are possible detrimental factors for fetal programming of the immune system in their offspring. We investigated the relationship of pre-pregnancy body mass index (pBMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) of mothers with the placental transport rate (PTR) of IgG antibodies and antineutrophil cytoplasmatic antibodies against lactoferrin (Lf-ANCA) and their concentration in umbilical cord blood serum (UCS), verifying the sex-specificity of this relationship. The examined group of this cross-sectional pilot study consisted of 101 pregnant women and their healthy CS-delivered newborn children.

Overweight and obesity (OWO) are linked to dyslipidemia and low-grade chronic inflammation, which is fueled by lipotoxicity and oxidative stress. In the context of pregnancy, maternal OWO has long been known to negatively impact on pregnancy outcomes and maternal health, as well as to imprint a higher risk for diseases in offspring later in life. Emerging research suggests that individual lipid metabolites, which collectively form the lipidome, may play a causal role in the pathogenesis of OWO-related diseases.
