Introduction: Several reviews have highlighted that the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) is the best diagnostic tool for assessing nutritional status in cancer patients. However, previous meta-analyses summarizing the prevalence of malnutrition and overall survival in patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancer are quite limited. This study aims to determine the overall prevalence and association between malnutrition, as defined by the PG-SGA, and mortality in adults with GI cancer.

Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) is a group of disorders in which there is an alteration in acid-base homeostasis because of the impairment of nephrons to excrete hydrogen ions or reabsorb bicarbonate ions, resulting in chronic metabolic acidosis. RTA is an important cause of rickets, particularly 'resistant rickets'. Dental manifestations frequently reported in patients with RTA include enamel hypoplasia and amelogenesis imperfecta, affecting permanent dentition.

Background: Childhood remains a vulnerable period and a key determiner for adult health. Various illnesses experienced by children in their early years determine future performance and contribution to society. Stunting resulting from undernutrition is a significant global health challenge, particularly in developing countries, yet its underlying mechanisms and consequences remain inadequately understood. This study utilizes as an in vivo model to investigate the molecular basis of stunting. Due to the conserved nature of signaling pathways between and vertebrates, this organism serves as an effective model for studying growth disorders.

Malnutrition risk and overall survival at solid tumour diagnosis.

BMJ Support Palliat Care

January 2025

Department of Solid Tumor Oncology, Atrium Health Levine Cancer, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Purpose: Malnutrition severely impacts tolerance to anticancer therapies, but any relationship with overall survival (OS) at the time of solid tumour diagnosis in outpatients in the USA remains unclear.

Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 3562 patients who completed the Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) at diagnosis, identifying the relationship between MST risk, a validated tool evaluating anorexia and weight loss, and OS. MST score of ≥2 of 5 was classified as high malnutrition risk (H-MST).
