Single-crystal nanowires are of broad interest for applications in nanotechnology. However, such wires are subject to both the Rayleigh-Plateau instability and an ovulation process that are expected to lead to their break up into particle arrays. Single crystal Ru nanowires were fabricated with axes lying along different crystallographic orientations. Wires bound by equilibrium facets along their length did not break up through either a Rayleigh-Plateau or ovulation process, while wires with other orientations broke up through a combination of both. Mechanistic insight is provided using a level-set simulation that accounts for strongly anisotropic surface energies, providing a framework for design of morphologically stable nanostructures.

In the complex dynamics of plant-insect interactions, the specialized galling of reproductive structures presents unique evolutionary adaptations. This study investigates the parasitic relationship between (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae), an ovary-galling wasp, and the inflorescences of (Araceae). We employed field experiments and histological analyses to investigate the mechanisms driving this interaction.

Background: Many plants, including those commonly found in the Fagaceae family, produce more flowers and ovules than mature fruits and seeds. In , an ovary contains 16-24 ovules, but only one develops into a seed. The other ovules abort or otherwise fail to fully develop, but the reason for this is unknown.

Steroid hormones, especially progesterone (P), estradiol (E), and testosterone (T), are key bioactive regulators in various female physiological processes, including growth and development, ovulation, and the reproductive cycle, as well as metabolism and mental health. As lipophilic molecules produced in sex glands, these steroid female hormones can be transported through blood vessels into various body fluids such as saliva, sweat, and urine. However, the ultralow concentration of steroid hormones down to picomolar (pM) level necessitates great demands for ultrasensitive but low-cost analytic tools to implement accurate, point-of-care or even continuous monitoring in a user-friendly fashion.
