In this work, poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hierarchically porous membranes (HPMs) with isolated large pores and continuous narrow nano-pores have been fabricated from its blend with poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) based on the combination of crystallization template with chemical or supercritical CO foaming. On the one hand, the decomposition of azodicarbonamide (ADC, chemical foaming agent) or the release of CO can produce isolated large pores. On the other hand, PMMA is expelled during the isothermal crystallization of PVDF in their miscible blend, yielding narrow nano-pores upon etching with a selective solvent. In the case of supercritical CO, the attained PVDF HPMs fail to improve separation performance because of the compact wall of isolated-large-pore and consequent poor connectivity of hierarchical pores. In the case of ADC, the optimal HPM exhibits much higher flux (up to 20 times) without any loss of selectivity compared with the reference only with nano-pores. The enhanced permeability can be attributed to the shorter diffusion length and lower diffusion barrier from isolated large pores, while the comparable selectivity is determined by narrow nano-pores in THE matrix.

Human nasal epithelium (HNE) organoid models of SARS-CoV-2 infection were adopted globally during the COVID-19 pandemic once it was recognized that the Vero cell line commonly used by virologists did not recapitulate human infection. However, the widespread use of HNE organoid infection models was hindered by the high cost of media and consumables, and the inherent limitation of basal cells as a scalable continuous source of cells. The human Calu-3 cell line, generated from a lung adenocarcinoma, was shown to largely recapitulate infection of the human epithelium and to preserve the SARS-CoV-2 genomic fidelity.

Objectives: Given the ongoing challenges regarding the specific roles of viral infections in cancer etiology, or as cancer co-morbidities, this study assessed potential associations between anti-viral, T-cell receptor (TCR) complementarity domain region-3 (CDR3s), and clinical outcomes for ovarian cancer.
Methods: TCR CDR3s were isolated from ovarian cancer specimens for a determination of which patients had anti-viral CDR3s and whether those patients had better or worse outcomes.
Results: Analyses revealed that patients with exact matches of anti-Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) CDR3 amino acid sequences exhibited better outcomes for both overall and disease-specific survival.

High-throughput sequencing was used to identify and characterize a novel marafivirus from the weed Leptochloa chinensis, which was tentatively named "Leptochloa chinensis marafivirus" (LcMV). The complete genome of the virus consists of 6,178 base pairs, and its nucleotide sequence is 73.82% identical to that of Sorghum almum marafivirus, which is a member of the genus Marafivirus within the family Tymoviridae.

Sustained pathologic myocardial hypertrophy can result in heart failure(HF); a significant health issue affecting a large section of the population worldwide. In HF there is a marked elevation in circulating levels of the peptide urotensin II(UII) but it is unclear whether this is a result of hypertrophy or whether the high levels contribute to the development of hypertrophy. The aim of this study is to investigate a role of UII and its receptor UT in the development of cardiac hypertrophy and the signalling molecules involved.

Mammalian gut microbial communities are thought to play a variety of important roles in health and fitness, including digestion, metabolism, nutrition, immune response, behavior, and pathogen protection. Gut microbiota diversity among hosts is strongly shaped by diet as well as phylogenetic relationships among hosts. Although various host factors may influence microbial community structure, the relative contribution may vary depending on several variables, such as taxonomic scales of the species studied, dietary patterns, geographic location, and gut physiology.
