Admittedly, the design requirements of compactness, low frequency, and broadband seem to constitute an impossible trinity, hindering the further development of elastic metamaterials (EMMs) in wave shielding engineering. To break through these constraints, we propose theoretical combinations of effective parameters for wave isolation based on the propagation properties of Lamb waves in the EMM layer. Accordingly, we design compact EMMs with a novel ultralow-frequency bandgap, and the role of auxeticity in the dissociation between the dipole mode and the toroidal dipole mode is clearly revealed. Finally, under the guidance of the improved gradient design, we integrate multiple bandgaps to assemble metamaterial barriers (MMBs) for broadband wave isolation. In particular, the original configuration is further optimized and its ultralow-frequency and broadband performance are proven by transmission tests. It is foreseeable that our work will provide a meaningful reference for the application of the new EMMs in disaster prevention and protection engineering.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus continues to circulate worldwide, causing the deaths of millions of people. The continuous circulation of the virus, its genetic diversity, the emergence of new variants with increased transmissibility, and/or the capacity of the virus to escape from the immune system constitute a major public health concern. In our study, we aimed to characterize SARS-CoV-2 strains in Iraq from the first introduction until the end of 2023, and to identify their variants, lineages, clades, and mutation patterns.

Magnetoelectric (ME) devices combining piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials have emerged as powerful tools to miniaturize and enhance sensing and communication technologies. This paper examines recent developments in bulk acoustic wave (BAW) and surface acoustic wave (SAW) ME devices, which demonstrate unique capabilities in ultra-sensitive magnetic sensing, compact antennas, and quantum applications. Leveraging the mechanical resonance of BAW and SAW modes, ME sensors achieve the femto- to pico-Tesla sensitivity ideal for biomedical applications, while ME antennas, operating at acoustic resonance, allow significant size reduction, with high radiation gain and efficiency, which is suited for bandwidth-restricted applications.

Soy protein isolate (SPI) possesses potential gelling properties, making it suitable for gel-based applications. However, the gel network stability and mechanical properties of SPI are relatively poor and can be improved through modifications or by combining it with other polymers, such as Konjac Glucomannan (KGM). Combining SPI with KGM can overcome the poor gel network stability and mechanical properties of SPI, but it reduces the water-absorbing capacity of the gel network after drying, which affects the quality characteristics of plant-based protein rehydrated foods and limits the economic feasibility of soy protein foods.

Here, we present an optical coherence elastography (OCE) technique that quantifies both the tension and elastic modulus of lens tissue and capsule. This method derives mechanical parameters from surface wave dispersion across a critical frequency range of 1-30 kHz.

Background: Despite a wealth of literature on marital dissatisfaction and adverse health outcomes, little is known about the relationship between marital dissatisfaction and frailty in older adults.
Methods: This longitudinal study utilised the data of 11 174 individuals who participated in the biennial Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing survey from 2006 to 2020 and were aged ≥45 during the initial wave. Frailty was measured using a frailty instrument, which utilised exhaustion, social isolation, and handgrip strength weakness.
