Environmental noise is considered the second most serious environmental risk factor in Europe. However, little evidence exists regarding its impact on health and sleep in children, and the results are inconclusive. In this study, we aim to analyse the effect of environmental noise exposure on 11-year-old children's sleep habits. Data were collected from 377 participants in the INMA-Gipuzkoa (INfancia y Medio Ambiente) cohort project using both parent-reported and actigraphic sleep measures. The results revealed that 60% of children have a day-evening-night environmental noise exposure (L) of above 55 dB, which is defined as a "high noise level". No differences in noise exposure were observed between different socioeconomic groups. However, no effect of environmental noise was found on sleep variables. The paper highlights the importance of studying how environmental noise may affect children's sleep.

Individual differences elucidate the perceptual benefits associated with robust temporal fine-structure processing.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Department of Communication Science and Disorders, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

The auditory system is unique among sensory systems in its ability to phase lock to and precisely follow very fast cycle-by-cycle fluctuations in the phase of sound-driven cochlear vibrations. Yet, the perceptual role of this temporal fine structure (TFS) code is debated. This fundamental gap is attributable to our inability to experimentally manipulate TFS cues without altering other perceptually relevant cues.

The production of nitrogen oxides (NO = NO + NO ) is substantial in urban areas and from fossil fuel-fired power plants, causing both local and regional pollution, with severe consequences for human health. To estimate their emissions and implement air quality policies, authorities often rely on reported emission inventories. The island of Cyprus is de facto divided into two different political entities, and as a result, such emissions inventories are not systematically available for the whole island.

Clinical Manifestations.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

UTHealth Houston, Houston, TX, USA.

Background: We have previously shown that there are 3 unique behavioral symptom clusters, or groupings of temporally related co-occurring behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) representing how an individual's daily BPSD group together relative to their own typical BPSD manifestation across a 21-day period. To further validate these symptom cluster concepts, we examined whether they are predicted by different environmental triggers.

Method: Family caregivers completed daily diary surveys for 8 consecutive days reporting on the physical, social and care environment in addition to their care recipients different BPSD.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Neurobehavioral Systems, Inc, Berkeley, CA, USA.

Background: The administration of cognitive tests in patients' homes facilitates access by underserved communities and increases testing capacity and efficiency. However, the validity of at-home computerized cognitive tests is often questioned because of limitations in examiner monitoring, distractions, environmental noise, and potential cheating. Here, we compare performance of the computerized and proctored California Cognitive Assessment Battery (CCAB) when administered at-home or in the laboratory using otherwise identical procedures.

Tinnitus prevalence and associations with leisure noise exposure among Canadians, aged 6 to 79 years.

Int J Audiol

January 2025

Environmental Health Science and Research Bureau, Health Canada, Ottawa, Canada.

Objective: To examine the association between individual, cumulative leisure noise exposure (CLNE), acceptable yearly exposure (AYE) and tinnitus among a nationally representative sample of Canadians.

Design: In-person household questionnaires were used to evaluate leisure noise exposure across age, sex, household income and tinnitus: ever experienced, previous year, frequent, bothersome. High (≥85 dBA, LEX), low (<85 dBA, LEX) CLNE and AYEs were defined according to occupational limits.
