Using particle trajectory data obtained from x-ray tomography, we determine two kinds of effective temperatures in a cyclically sheared granular system. The first one is obtained from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem which relates the diffusion and mobility of lighter tracer particles immersed in the system. The second is the Edwards compactivity defined via the packing volume fluctuations. We find robust agreement between these two temperatures, independent of the type of the tracers, cyclic shear amplitudes, and particle surface roughness, giving therefore the first experimental evidence that the concept of effective temperature is valid in driven frictional granular systems.
The structural periodicity in photonic crystals guarantees the crystal's effective energy band structure, which is the fundamental cornerstone of topological and moiré physics. However, the shear modulus in most fluids is close to zero, which makes it challenging for fluids to maintain spatial periodicity akin to photonic crystals. We realized periodic vortices in hydrodynamic metamaterials and created a bilayer moiré superlattice by stacking and twisting two such vortex fluids.
The reliability of nanocomposite conductive inks under cyclic loading is the key to designing robust flexible electronics. Although resistance increases with cycling and models exist, the exact degradation mechanism is not well understood and is critical for developing inks. This study links cracking behavior to changes in electrical resistance by performing in situ cyclic stretch experiments in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with synchronized resistance measurements.
Anisotropic domains with 180° periodicity are known to be universally present on graphene as well as on other two-dimensional (2D) crystals. The physical origin of the domains and the mechanism of its anisotropy are, however, still unclear. Here, by employing in-plane elastic imaging by torsional resonance atomic force microscopy (TR-AFM), we demonstrate that the observed domains on graphene are of in-plane elastic (shear) anisotropy but not of friction anisotropy as commonly believed.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is in parallel with the obesity epidemic, and it is the most common cause of liver diseases. The patients with severe insulin-resistant diabetes having high body mass index (BMI), high-grade adipose tissue insulin resistance, and high hepatocellular triacylglycerols (triglycerides; TAG) content develop hepatic fibrosis within a 5-year follow-up. Insulin resistance with the deficiency of insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2)-associated phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) activity causes an increase in intracellular fatty acid-derived metabolites such as diacylglycerol (DAG), fatty acyl CoA, or ceramides.
For the recently legalized US hemp industry (Cannabis sativa), cross-pollination between neighboring fields has become a significant challenge, leading to contaminated seeds, reduced oil yields, and in some cases, mandated crop destruction. As a step towards assessing hemp cross-pollination risk, this study characterizes the seasonal and spatial patterns in windborne hemp pollen dispersal spanning the conterminous United States (CONUS). By leveraging meteorological data obtained through mesoscale model simulations, we have driven Lagrangian Stochastic models to simulate wind-borne hemp pollen dispersion across CONUS on a county-by-county basis for five months from July to November, encompassing the potential flowering season for industrial hemp.
