Chopping techniques in cataract surgery. | LitMetric

Chopping techniques in cataract surgery.

Curr Opin Ophthalmol

Altos Eye Physicians, Los Altos.

Published: January 2023

Purpose Of Review: To explain reasons for phaco chop, outline strategies for transitioning to chop, and summarize recent articles discussing chopping techniques.

Recent Findings: New variations of phaco chop may help with managing dense cataracts. Studies generally continue to show similar phaco time between traditional manual chopping and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. A nitinol ring prechopper compresses the lens similarly to horizontal chopping, which may reduce phaco energy for certain cases.

Summary: Both vertical and horizontal chopping continue to demonstrate multiple advantages over other nucleus disassembly techniques.

Background: Acute retinal necrosis triggered by routine cataract surgery is a rare condition, which may be overlooked by the clinicians. We report a case of unilateral acute retinal necrosis (ARN) with the onset 4 days after uncomplicated cataract surgery. The patient demonstrates satisfactory outcomes following anti-virus therapy.

Laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG) offers a non-invasive, accessible means to evaluate ocular blood flow. A case of a woman in her 70s presenting with 6 months of ocular injection following cataract surgery is presented in this report. LSFG measurements indicated lower mean blur rate (MBR) values in the affected eye compared with the healthy eye, though a decrease was also noted in the healthy eye.

[Circular or radial capsulotomy for the treatment of capsular phimosis: Which is the better option?].

J Fr Ophtalmol

March 2025

Département d'ophtalmologie, hôpital militaire Avicenne, Marrakech, Maroc; Faculté de médecine, université Cadi Ayad, Marrakech, Maroc.

Introduction: Capsular phimosis is a common postoperative complication of cataract surgery, resulting from fibrous metaplasia of residual epithelial cells. It leads to capsular contraction, which affects visual quality and the stability of the intraocular lens (IOL). Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy, performed using either circular or radial techniques, remains the standard treatment.

CHU d'Amiens-Picardie, 1, rue du Professeur-Christian-Cabrol, 80000 Amiens, France. Electronic address:

Objective: To evaluate the impact of mini-monovision on visual performance after bilateral implantation of AE2UV/ZOE™ extended depth of focus IOLs.

Methods: This is a single-center prospective study including 60 patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery. Patients were divided into 2 groups: with mini-monovision targeted for group 1 and emmetropia targeted for group 2.
