Although SERS has been widely recognized as one of the highly sensitive analytical methods that can be deployed in the field with high sensitivity and short analysis time, reports regarding the fast determination of malathion at low concentrations are still scarce. Here, in this work, the solution pH and various halogen co-adsorbates were explored to promote the SERS signal of malathion using the citrate-reduced Ag NPs. It was found that chloride anions were the most efficient signal booster among the three halogen ions screened. Further examination of the SERS profile of the malathion in the presence of different halogen species found that the stretching mode of the P-S bond shifted to a lower frequency with Cl, which may imply closer (and stronger) binding of malathion to the Ag NPs. This concurs with literature reports that halogen ions could facilitate the adsorption of a certain analyte onto the SERS substrate. In addition, hydrogen ions showed a synergistic effect on SERS signal enhancement when combined with chloride anions. At optimum conditions, the malathion could be detected with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3 ppb. Malathion-spiked cherry tomatoes and oranges were analyzed, and the recovery rates were found to be within 85-100%.

Artificial anion transporters offer a potential way to treat deficiencies in cellular anion transport of genetic origins. In contrast to the large variety of mobile anion carriers and self-assembled anion channels reported, unimolecular anion channels are less investigated. Herein, we present a unique example of a unimolecular anion channel based on a bambusuril (BU) macrocycle, a well-established anion receptor.

Understanding the interplay between the molecular structure of the ionic liquid (IL) subunit, the resulting nanostructure and ion transport in polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) is necessary for the realization of high-performance solid-state electrolytes required in various advanced applications. Herein, we present a detailed structural characterization of a recently synthesized series of acrylate-based PIL homopolymers and networks with imidazolium cations and chloride anions with varying alkyl spacer and terminal group lengths designed for organic solid-state batteries based on X-ray scattering. The impact of the concentrations of both the crosslinker and added tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBACl) conducting salt on the structural characteristics is also investigated.

We developed a systematic polarizable force field for molten trivalent rare-earth chlorides, from lanthanum to europium, based on first-principle calculations. The proposed model was employed to investigate the local structure and physicochemical properties of pure molten salts and their mixtures with sodium chloride. We computed densities, heat capacities, surface tensions, viscosities, and diffusion coefficients and disclosed their evolution along the lanthanide series, filling the gaps for poorly studied elements, such as promethium and europium.

E2 elimination and SN2 substitution reactions are of central importance in preparative organic synthesis due to their stereospecificity. Herein, atomistic dynamics of a prototype reaction of ethyl chloride with hydroxide ion are uncovered that show strikingly distinct features from the case with fluoride anion. Chemical dynamics simulations reproduce the experimental reaction rate and reveal that the E2 proceeding through a direct elimination mechanism dominates over SN2 for the hydroxide ion reaction.

The role played by anionic channels in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is not known. Chloride channel accessory 1 (CLCA1) facilitates the activity of TMEM16A (Anoctamin-1), a Ca2+-dependent Cl- channel. We examined if CLCA1/TMEM16A had a role in DKD.
