Spike-wave-discharges (SWD) are the electrophysiological hallmark of absence epilepsy. SWD are generated in the thalamo-cortical network and a seizure onset zone was identified in the somatosensory cortex (S1). We have shown before that inhibition of the centromedian thalamic nucleus (CM) in GAERS rats resulted in a selective suppression of the spike component while rhythmic cortical 5-9 Hz oscillations remained present.

Introduction: In primary auditory cortex (A1), nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) containing α2 subunits are expressed in layer 5 Martinotti cells (MCs)-inhibitory interneurons that send a main axon to superficial layers to inhibit distal apical dendrites of pyramidal cells (PCs). MCs also contact interneurons in supragranular layers that, in turn, inhibit PCs. Thus, MCs may regulate PCs via inhibition and disinhibition, respectively, of distal and proximal apical dendrites.

Background: Postoperative delirium is the most common complication following surgery among older adults, and has been consistently associated with increased mortality and morbidity, cognitive decline, and loss of independence, as well as markedly increased health-care costs. Electroencephalography (EEG) spectral slowing has frequently been observed during episodes of delirium, whereas intraoperative frontal alpha power is associated with postoperative delirium. We sought to identify preoperative predictors that could identify individuals at high risk for postoperative delirium, which could guide clinical decision-making and enable targeted interventions to potentially decrease delirium incidence and postoperative delirium-related complications.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a pervasive clinical problem associated with significant morbidity and mortality. However, TBI remains clinically and biophysically ill-defined, and prognosis remains difficult even with the standardization of clinical guidelines and advent of multimodality monitoring. Here we leverage a unique data set from TBI patients implanted with either intracranial strip electrodes during craniotomy or quad-lumen intracranial bolts with depth electrodes as part of routine clinical practice.

Objective: Although the clinical efficacy of deep brain stimulation targeting the anterior nucleus (AN) and centromedian nucleus (CM) of the thalamus has been actively investigated for the treatment of medication-resistant epilepsy, few studies have investigated dynamic ictal changes in corticothalamic connectivity in human electroencephalographic (EEG) recording.
