The efficient and selective removal of refractory antibiotics from high-strength antibiotic production wastewater is crucial but remains a substantial challenge. In this study, a novel ozone micronano-bubble (MNB)-enhanced treatment system was constructed for antibiotic production wastewater treatment. Compared with conventional ozone, ozone MNBs exhibit excellent treatment efficiency for oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation and toxicity decrease. Notably, this study identifies the overlooked singlet oxygen (O) for the first time as a crucial active species in the ozone MNB system through probe and electron paramagnetic resonance methods. Subsequently, the oxidation mechanisms of OTC by ozone MNBs are systematically investigated. Owing to the high reactivity of OTC toward O, ozone MNBs enhance the selective and anti-interference performance of OTC degradation in raw OTC production wastewater with complex matrixes. This study provides insights into the mechanism of ozone MNB-enhanced pollutant degradation and a new perspective for the efficient treatment of high-concentration industrial wastewater using ozone MNBs. In addition, this study presents a promising technology with scientific guidance for the treatment of antibiotic production wastewater.

This review explores biochar's potential as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for remediating organic pollutants, particularly polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and pesticides, in water. Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced from biomass pyrolysis, has demonstrated adsorption efficiencies exceeding 90% under optimal conditions, depending on the feedstock type, pyrolysis temperature, and functionalization. High surface area (up to 1500 m/g), porosity, and modifiable surface functional groups make biochar effective in adsorbing a wide range of contaminants, including toxic metals, organic pollutants, and nutrients.

A Review on Biohazards Removal in Ethiopia: Efficacy of Existing Treatment Systems and Challenges.

Environ Health Insights

January 2025

Department of Environmental Health, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Injibara University, Injibara, Ethiopia.

Background: Wastewater treatment is crucial to protecting public health and the environment by removing Biohazards. In Ethiopia, however, significant research gaps limit progress, especially regarding the efficiency of Biohazard removal in existing treatment facilities. This review evaluates the effectiveness of current treatment methods for Biohazard removal, highlights key challenges, and offers recommendations.

In the last few years, many efforts have been devoted to the recovery and valorization of olive oil by-products because of their potentially high biological value. The olive mill wastewater (OMWW), a dark-green brown colored liquid that mainly consists of fruit vegetation water, is particularly exploited in this regard for its great content in phenolic compounds with strong antioxidant properties. In our previous work, we produced different OMWW fractions enriched in hydroxytyrosol- and hydroxytyrosol/oleuropein (i.

Valorization of mixed blackwater/agricultural wastes for bioelectricity and biohydrogen production: A microbial treatment pathway.

The management of wastewater and agricultural wastes has been limited by the separate treatment processes, which exacerbate pollution and contribute to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions. Given the energy demands and financial burdens of traditional treatment facilities, there is a pressing need for technologies that can concurrently treat solid waste and generate energy. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of producing bioelectricity and biohydrogen through the microbial treatment of blackwater and agricultural waste using a dual-chamber Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC).

This study introduces a sustainable biological approach for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Conocarpus seeds, aimed at improving the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) in wastewater treatment. The photocatalytic efficiency of AgNPs, synthesized under varying concentrations of silver nitrate (AgNO) and pH levels, was evaluated, together with the effectiveness of a photocatalytic reactor. The synthesized samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM).
