Published: August 2024

Various models of the dimensionality of behaviors associated with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) have been proposed or reported. Many of these models describe ODD-related behaviors in either two- or three-factor models. The purpose of the study was to determine which of the models of ODD-related behaviors demonstrated the best fit using teacher report of 15,521 children across eight grade levels and to examine measurement invariance of the model across grades. Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to determine which of the models demonstrated best fit of teacher-reported ODD-related behaviors across eight grades. A two-factor model from a preliminary analysis of a subset of the current data demonstrated a better model fit than any of the existing six models examined and demonstrated measurement invariance across all grades. Across all of the models, affective and behavioral symptoms loaded onto separate factors, which may be an important consideration to inform future clinical and empirical work.

Article Synopsis
  • This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore brain activity in children aged 7 to 15 with ADHD, focusing on those with and without learning disabilities or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).
  • Researchers categorized 165 medication-naive participants into four groups and monitored hemodynamic changes in specific brain regions while analyzing differences in brain activity using a metric called amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF).
  • Results showed that children with ADHD had higher ALFF values compared to healthy controls, and those with ADHD and learning disabilities had distinct patterns of brain activity, while ADHD with ODD did not show significant differences, suggesting ODD symptoms may be part of ADHD rather than a separate disorder.

The development of insect appendages requires the expression of multiple genes in a strict spatial and temporal order. The odd-skipped family genes are vital transcriptional factors involved in embryonic development. The development and morphogenesis of the insect wing requires multiple transcription factors to regulate the expression of wing patterning genes at the transcriptional level.

The goal of this article is to investigate the symptom dimensions of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD; irritability, defiance) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity) as predictors of academic performance, depressive symptoms, and peer functioning in middle childhood. Children ( = 346; 51% female) were assessed via teacher-report on measures of ODD/ADHD symptoms at baseline (Grades K-2) and academic performance, depressive symptoms, peer rejection, and victimization on 7 occasions over 4 school years (K-2 through 3-5). Self-report and grade point average data collected in Grades 3-5 served as converging outcome measures.

The present study examined the independent contributions and the interaction effects of oppositional defiant problems (ODD), callous unemotional traits (CU) and anxiety symptoms on attentional orienting to emotional faces, in a community sample of preschoolers. Additionally, based on Rothbart's (2007) model of temperament, we analyzed whether fine-grained dimensions of reactivity (fear, anger, discomfort, sadness, activity level, approach, high intensity pleasure, impulsivity) and self-regulation (attentional shifting, attentional focusing, inhibitory control), as well as the higher order temperamental factors of negative affectivity, surgency and effortful control are associated with CU traits and ODD-related problems. Attentional orienting to emotional faces was assessed with pictorial Dot-probe task, while teachers rated CU traits and ODD-related problems.
