The ion transport properties of ionomers comprised of polydimethylsiloxanes with amidinium or imidazolinium attached side chains and alkyldithiocarbamate anions (where alkyl is hexyl or octadecyl) have been investigated in chloroform solutions principally and as neat liquids. The influence of modifying the molecular weights of the polydimethylsiloxanes, the frequency of their amidininium or imidazolinium side groups, and temperature on the conductivity have been explored. When a solvent more polar than chloroform, -tetrachloroethane, was employed, a large increase in the ionic conductivity was found despite there being an increase in the viscosity of the solution. At least in these two solvents, polarity is more important in determining the conductivity than the viscosity. When normalized for ion content, Walden plots of the ionomer solutions at different ionomer concentrations approached values found for 1 M aqueous KCl. As neat liquids, the amidinium and imidazolinium hexyldithiocarbamate ionomers exceeded the values associated with the "superionic" region of the Walden plot (i.e., above the conductivity values for 1 M aqueous KCl). As ion content and polymer molecular weight increased, larger decoupling between bulk viscosity and ionic conductivity was noted, probably as a result of changes in the dynamic fragility of the ionomers.

Effects of cyclic and acyclic amidine side-chains on the properties of polysiloxane ionomers constructed from three uncharged components.

Department of Chemistry and Institute for Soft Matter Synthesis and Metrology, Georgetown University, Washington, DC 20057-1227, USA.

Ionomers, polysiloxanes with imidazolinium dithiocarbamate side chains, have been synthesized from three uncharged components-a polysiloxane with imidazole side chains, CS, and hexylamine or octadecylamine. Their structural and dynamic properties are compared over a temperature range of 0-50 °C with those of the analogous ionomers in which the polysiloxanes have amidinium side chains. The results, primarily from differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction measurements, and rheology show that the small structural (and smaller electronic) differences between the cyclic 5-membered ring imidazolinium and acyclic amidinium groups have marked effects on the bulk properties of the ionomers.

Synthesis and reactivity of α-cationic phosphines: the effect of imidazolinium and amidinium substituents.

Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung, Kaiser Wilhelm Platz 1, 45470-Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany.

Mono- and dicationic phosphines have been synthesized through the reaction of chloroimidazolinium or chloroamidinium salts with secondary or primary phosphines respectively. The resulting ligands, which depict a significantly reduced donor ability compared with their neutral analogues, have been used to design Pt(II) and Au(I) complexes that effectively catalyse the hydroarylation of alkynes.

Novel amidino-derivatives of phenylene-bisbenzothiazoles were synthesized and tested for their antiproliferative activity against several human cancer cell lines, as well as DNA-binding properties. The synthetic approach used for preparation of isomeric amidino substituted-phenylene-bis-benzothyazoles 3a-3f was achieved by condensation reaction of isophthaloyl dichloride 1a and terephthaloyl dichloride 1b or with phthalic acid 1c with 5-amidinium-2-aminobenzothiolate 2a and 5-(imidazolinium-2-yl)-2-aminobenzothiolate 2b in good yields. The targeted compounds were converted in the desired water soluble dihydrochloride salts by reaction of appropriate free base with concd HCl in ethanol or acetic acid.

Imidazolinium and amidinium salts as Lewis acid organocatalysts.

Beilstein J Org Chem

December 2012

Institute of Organic Chemistry, Clausthal University of Technology, 38678 Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Germany.

The application of imidazolinium and amidinium salts as soft Lewis acid organocatalysts is described. These salts were suitable catalysts for the activation of unsaturated thioesters in a Diels-Alder reaction and in the ring opening of thiiranes and epoxides. The products were isolated in good yields.
