Article Abstract

Zn Sn O (ZTO) deposited by atomic layer deposition has shown promising results as a buffer layer material for kesterite CuZnSnS (CZTS) thin film solar cells. Increased performance was observed when a ZTO buffer layer was used as compared to the traditional CdS buffer, and the performance was further increased after an air annealing treatment of the absorber. In this work, we study how CZTS absorber surface treatments may influence the chemical and electronic properties at the ZTO/CZTS interface and the reactions that may occur at the absorber surface prior to atomic layer deposition of the buffer layer. For this, we have used a combination of microscopy and synchrotron-based spectroscopies with variable information depths (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-energy X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy), allowing for an in-depth analysis of the CZTS near-surface regions and bulk material properties. No significant ZTO buffer thickness variation is observed for the differently treated CZTS absorbers, and no differences are observed when comparing the bulk properties of the samples. However, the formation of SnO and compositional changes observed toward the CZTS surface upon an air annealing treatment may be linked to the modified buffer layer growth. Further, the results indicate that the initial N annealing step integrated in the buffer layer growth by atomic layer deposition, which removes Na-CO species from the CZTS surface, may be useful for the ZTO/CZTS device performance.

Histopathology of spontaneous lesions in FVB/N mice.

J Toxicol Pathol

January 2025

Safety and Bioscience Research Department, Translational Research Division, Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. 216 Totsuka-cho, Totsuka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa 244-8602, Japan.

The FVB/N mouse strain is widely used in transgenic studies and as a model for autoimmune diseases. Although spontaneous lesions have been reported in aged FVB/N mice, information regarding younger FVB/N mice is lacking. This study aimed to investigate the spontaneous lesions in young FVB/N mice.

Poor wear- and corrosion-resistance of 316L SS implants are critical problems in orthopedic implants. This study aims to improve the wear- and corrosion-resistance of 316L SS through surface coating. In this study, a bilayer composite coating consisting of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) as the first layer, and titania (TiO)- and Cu-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (Cu-MBGNs) were deposited as the second layer on a 316L SS electrophoretic deposition (EPD).

Currently commercial colorimetric paper lateral flow immunoassays exhibit insufficient limit of detection (LOD) and limited clinical sensitivity toward the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antigens, which causes a high false negative rate. To mitigate this issue, a new plasmon-enhanced fluorescence probe was developed for paper lateral flow strips (PLFSs). The probe is made of a sandwich-structured Ag-core@silica@dye@silica-shell nanoparticle in which fluorescent dyes are sandwiched between the plasmonic Ag core and the silica outer shell, and the separation distance between the Ag core and the dye molecules is controlled by the silica space layer.

MitoStores: stress-induced aggregation of mitochondrial proteins.

Biol Chem

Cell Biology, 26562 RPTU University of Kaiserslautern, Erwin-Schrödinger-Strasse 13, D-67663 Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Most mitochondrial proteins are synthesized in the cytosol and post-translationally imported into mitochondria. If the rate of protein synthesis exceeds the capacity of the mitochondrial import machinery, precursor proteins can transiently accumulate in the cytosol. The cytosolic accumulation of mitochondrial precursors jeopardizes cellular protein homeostasis (proteostasis) and can be the cause of diseases.

The aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) are chronically plagued by the inevitable side-reaction and uneven Zn planets stack. Through regulating the water activity and Zn crystal dynamics could effectively relieve those anode/electrolyte interface problems. The (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (HBCD), characterized by the excluded-volume and mitigating zinc-flux aggregation effect, is chosen as the electrolyte additive to tail the anode/electrolyte interface.
