Background: This study aimed to assess the accuracy of veterinary professionals' psychomotor and visual estimation of lengths.

Methods: Members of staff at a single veterinary referral hospital were asked a series of demographic questions. Respondents were first asked to draw lines of a specified length, while being blinded to their previous responses. Respondents were then shown lines on separate non-standard-size laminated sheets of paper and asked to estimate their length. A total of five estimations were made in each section, with lengths varying from 3 to 120 mm.

Results: A total of 101 respondents were assessed. The median absolute percentage error was 24.4% for psychomotor estimation and 33.3% for visual estimation. Respondents were significantly more accurate at psychomotor than visual estimation (p = 0.00024). Respondents tended to underestimate with psychomotor estimation and overestimate with visual estimation. There was no significant difference between the accuracy of veterinarians and veterinary nurses.

Limitation: When divided by demographic, not all sample sizes met the power calculation threshold, thus limiting their interpretation.

Conclusion: Veterinary professionals must recognise the limitations of estimating length using visual appraisal alone. Measuring devices should be utilised where appropriate.

Comparison of two strategies estimating surgically induced astigmatism in position prediction of toric IOLs in 2.2 mm cataract surgery.

Graefes Arch Clin Exp Ophthalmol

December 2024

Eye Institute and Department of Ophthalmology, Eye & ENT Hospital, Fudan University, No. 83 Fenyang Road, Shanghai, 200031, China.

Purpose: To compare the precision of the arithmetic mean of surgically induced astigmatism (M-SIA) and the centroid of surgically induced astigmatism (C-SIA) in estimating SIA when predicting the power and axis of toric IOLs under different circumstances.

Methods: 120 eyes of 99 patients undergoing toric IOL replacement in a simple cataract surgery were included in the retrospective study. The predicted position of toric IOL was calculated by Z Calc online calculator and Barrett Toric Calculator with M-SIA (0.

Background: The aim of this study is to develop a method we call "cost mining" to unravel cost variation and identify cost drivers by modelling integrated patient pathways from primary care to the palliative care setting. This approach fills an urgent need to quantify financial strains on healthcare systems, particularly for colorectal cancer, which is the most expensive cancer in Australia, and the second most expensive cancer globally.

Methods: We developed and published a customized algorithm that dynamically estimates and visualizes the mean, minimum, and total costs of care at the patient level, by aggregating activity-based healthcare system costs (e.

GPS/VIO integrated navigation system based on factor graph and fuzzy logic.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Electrical Engineering, Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, 16846-13114, Iran.

In today's technologically advanced landscape, precision in navigation and positioning holds paramount importance across various applications, from robotics to autonomous vehicles. A common predicament in location-based systems is the reliance on Global Positioning System (GPS) signals, which may exhibit diminished accuracy and reliability under certain conditions. Moreover, when integrated with the Inertial Navigation System (INS), the GPS/INS system could not provide a long-term solution for outage problems due to its accumulated errors.

The scope of the emerging field of Ayurvedic-biology visualized thus far is confined to studies on dimensions pertaining to clinical and experimental pharmacology, basic trans-disciplinary science and drug design. However, given the multiple facets of classical Ayurveda knowledge system, its application in the field of organic agriculture perhaps also needs to be urgently explored. The urgency is due to the growing public acceptance of Ayurveda as a preferred clinical choice for well-being and disease management.
