Rapid and selective detection of biomarkers at trace levels is a highly coveted objective in the early diagnosis of cancer. Herein, we disclose the design and synthesis of a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) substituted perylene diimide. This compound is fully characterized in solution by multi nuclear NMR, as well as in gas state by ESI-MS. Surprisingly, solid-state characterization revealed an unusual cubic morphology with particle dimensions of 80-160 nm. Fluorescence studies indicate that the bulky POSS units effectively prevent perylene's aggregation caused quenching, yielding quantum yields as high as 92%. Exposing the sensor droplet-cast on quartz to anline and o-toluidine, two important biomarkers for lung cancer, results in very highly reproducible, reversible and selective fluorescence quenching responses, with LODs as low as 19 and 8 ng L, and linear ranges of 65-350 and 25-450 ng L respectively. Mechanistic investigations point to photoinduced electron transfer (PET) as the operative pathway responsible for fluorescence quenching.

The combination of polyphenols and protein can improve the functional characteristics of protein. How to effectively promote the binding of polyphenols to protein is still a difficult topic. In this study, hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) was used to induce the fabrication of complexes between soy protein isolate (SPI) and different polyphenols (tannic acid (TA), chlorogenic acid (CGA), ferulic acid (FA), caffeic acid (CA), and gallic acid (GA)).

The extensive use of tetracyclines in livestock poses health risks due to their residues in animal-derived food; therefore, developing simple detection methods to replace complex traditional approaches is of paramount importance. Here, we developed a dual-ligand zinc-based metal-organic framework material, Zn-BTC-BDC-NH (denoted as ZTD), for the detection of tetracyclines. The intrinsic blue fluorescence of ZTD was quenched upon the introduction of tetracyclines due to electron transfer from -NH of ZTD to -CO- and -OH groups of tetracycline molecules; meanwhile, the new green fluorescence emission was generated through π-π stacking between aromatic rings and the formation of complexes between Zn and C-O/C═O groups.

Homogeneous analysis techniques offer several advantages as alternatives to heterogeneous immunoassays, such as simplicity and rapidity. In this study, a visual homogeneous immunoassay without a labeling process was developed based on target-induced steric hindrance to regulate competitive recognition mechanism. Specifically, as the analyte concentration varies, the change of microenvironment based on steric hindrance could affect the recognition of Cu by signal probes.

Heroin as a derivative of morphine contains the alkaloids and flavonoids with plenty of three to five aromatic rings. The latter is known as the main source of fluorescence emission after laser excitation. Here, laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy at excitation line of 405 nm with the solvent densitometry method is introduced based on modified Beer-Lambert (MBL), for the rapid and reliable identification of street heroin samples.

The prevalence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection and the emergence of drug-resistant HSV-1 strains posts a significant global health challenge, necessitating the urgent development of effective anti-HSV-1 drugs. As one of the most prevalent molecular chaperones, heat shock protein 90 α (Hsp90α) has been extensively demonstrated to regulate a range of viral infections, thus representing a promising antiviral target. In this study, we identified JD-13 as a novel Hsp90α inhibitor and explored its capability in inhibiting HSV-1 infection.
