Article Abstract

Antarctica is a remote place, the continent is covered by ice and its surrounding coastal areas are frozen for the majority of the year. Due to its peculiarity the observation of the underwater organisms is particularly difficult, complicated by logistic factors. We present a long-term dataset consisting of 755 images acquired by using a non-invasive, autonomous imaging device and encompassing both the Antarctic daylight and dark periods, including the corresponding transition phases. All images have the same field of view showing the benthic fauna and part of the water column above, including fishes present in the monitored period. All the images are manually annotated after a visual inspection performed by expert biologists. The extended monitoring period and the annotated images make the dataset a valuable benchmark suitable for studying the dynamics of the long-term Antarctic underwater fauna as well as for developing and testing algorithms for automated image analysis focused on the recognition and classification of the Antarctic organisms and the automated analysis of their long-term dynamics.

Ecological integrity, encompassing physical, chemical, and biological aspects, is crucial for sustaining ecosystem service functions and stability. As the largest freshwater lake in China, the ecological integrity of Poyang Lake has attracted much attention due to the over-exploitation of its water resources in recent years. In this study, several biological and water quality surveys on water ecological conditions were carried out at 11 sampling points of Poyang Lake from 1998 to 2022, and the ecological health of Poyang Lake was evaluated by use of the O/E (Observation/Expectation) model and the chemical-biological index method according to the status of the water quality and the structure of the benthic fauna in the four seasons, respectively.

Constructed wetlands (CWs), originally designed to mitigate chemical water pollution, often host noticeable aquatic fauna. However, little is known about the impact of the contaminants circulating within CWs on this local fauna, questioning the role of CWs as ecological refuges or traps. The variability in trophic position and carbon isotopic signatures can provide information about their dietary flexibility and its ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions. The impact of the invasive blue crab Callinectes sapidus was assessed by estimating its trophic position and isotopic niche using stable isotopes (δ³C, δ⁵N, δ³⁴S) across different invaded Atlantic coastal areas. This study, the first of its kind in the eastern Atlantic range, reveals the crab's omnivorous behavior with a wide trophic position (TP = 2-4), consistent with findings from its native range.
