In the dynamic environment of burning, thermonuclear deuterium-tritium plasmas, diagnosing the time-resolved neutron energy spectrum is of critical importance. Strategies exist for this diagnosis in magnetic confinement fusion plasmas, which presently have a lifetime of ∼10 longer than inertial confinement fusion (ICF) plasmas. Here, we present a novel concept for a simple, precise, and scale-able diagnostic to measure time-resolved neutron spectra in ICF plasmas. The concept leverages general tomographic reconstruction techniques adapted to time-of-flight parameter space, and then employs an updated Monte Carlo algorithm and National Ignition Facility-relevant constraints to reconstruct the time-evolving neutron energy spectrum. Reconstructed spectra of the primary 14.028 MeV n peak are in good agreement with the exact synthetic spectra. The technique is also used to reconstruct the time-evolving downscattered spectrum, although the present implementation shows significantly more error.

Interparticle ligand exchange can occur during the formation of nanoparticle superlattices (NPSLs), affecting the symmetry of the NPSLs. Here, we report time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (TR-SANS) measurements of the interparticle exchange kinetics of thiolate ligands among gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) at different temperatures. To track the ligand exchange among AuNPs, two groups of AuNPs were functionalized with hydrogenated and deuterated dodecanethiol, respectively, and then mixed in a solvent mixture of toluene and deuterated toluene for shell contrast.

The impact of additives on the nanoscale structures of spin-cast polymer composite films, particularly in polymer solar cells, is a topic of significant interest. This study focuses on the blend film comprising poly(thieno[3,4-]thio-phene--benzodi-thio-phene) (PTB7) and [6,6]-phenyl-C-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), exploring how additives like 1,8-di-iodo-octane (DIO) influence the film structures spin-cast from chloro-benzene solution. Combined results of specular X-ray and neutron reflectivity, grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS and GIWAXS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that DIO could significantly enhance the dispersion of PCBM and reduce composition inhomogeneity in the film.
