In the USA, low back pain related illness accounts for approximately 149 million workdays lost each year. Initial management of back pain typically involves allied healthcare professionals who implement various treatments, such as chiropractic manipulation, physiotherapy, and acupuncture which have varying outcomes and levels of supporting evidence. Another passive treatment for back pain is inversion table therapy (ITT). It is a form of spinal traction which is thought to have a role in relieving low back pain due to the gravity-facilitated traction of the spine which distracts the lumbar vertebrae. However, ITT is not without risk. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Medical Device Reporting Events Database, ITT has resulted in serious injuries including spinal cord injury, fractures, lacerations, and death. The FDA has regulated ITT for only manufacturers that indicated medical use; however, most manufacturers have not made such medical claims and were exempt from FDA regulation. This article discusses the risks of ITT, the current regulatory process for ITT, and the need for a better understanding of the role of ITT in the treatment of spinal pain while optimizing consumer safety.Implications for rehabilitationInversion table therapy (ITT) is a form of spinal traction which is thought to have a role in relieving low back pain due to the gravity-facilitated traction of the spine which distracts the lumbar vertebrae.According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) statistics, injuries due to non-powered traction from various medical devices have been rising since 2011.The FDA has regulated ITT for only manufacturers that indicated medical use; however, most manufacturers have not made such medical claims and were exempt from FDA regulation. This article discusses the risks of ITT, the current regulatory process for ITT, and the need for a better understanding of the role of ITT in the treatment of spinal pain while optimizing consumer safety.

Ciprofol, a novel γ-aminobutyric acid receptor agonist, outperforms propofol with minimal cardiovascular effects, higher potency, reduced injection pain, and a broader safety margin. Despite these advantages, ciprofol's clinical research is still emerging. This study compares the median effective dose (ED) and adverse reactions of ciprofol and propofol, in conjunction with sufentanil, for suppressing cardiovascular responses during tracheal intubation.

Introduction: Sedation ensures a child remains motionless during a procedure and decreases anxiety. Several pharmacologic regimes exist for paediatric sedation. However, often, intravenous cannulation is required, causing distress for the child.

Introduction: The link between parent-child separation through child welfare systems and negative health and social outcomes is well documented. In contrast, despite the over-representation of Indigenous children and youth in child welfare systems, the relationship between child welfare system involvement and health and social outcomes among Indigenous populations has not been systematically reviewed. Our objective is to assess whether Indigenous People who have been exposed to a child welfare system personally or intergenerationally (ie, parents and/or grandparents) within Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA (CANZUS countries) and the circumpolar region are at an increased risk for negative health and social outcomes compared with other exposed and non-exposed groups.

Bayesian network for predicting mandibular third molar extraction difficulty.

BMC Oral Health

January 2025

Sub-Institute of Public Safety Standardization, China National Institute of Standardization, No.4 Zhichun Road, Haidian District, Beijing, 100191, PR China.

Background: This study aimed to establish a model for predicting the difficulty of mandibular third molar extraction based on a Bayesian network to meet following requirements: (1) analyse the interaction of the primary risk factors; (2) output quantitative difficulty-evaluation results based on the patient's personal situation; and (3) identify key surgical points and propose surgical protocols to decrease complications.

Methods: Relevant articles were searched to identify risk factors. Clinical knowledge and experience were used to analyse the risk factors to establish the Bayesian network.
