Polysaccharides' derivatives are promising biologically active compounds for biotechnology, nutrition, industries, and are becoming increasingly important in medicine and pharmacy. Laminaran from brown alga Saccharina cichorioides (ScL) was chemically modified to obtain the carboxymethylated derivative (ScLCM) with improved structure and bioactivity. ScLCM was identified as (1 → 3)-β-D-glucan with -CH-COOH groups at some positions 2, 4, and 6 of glucose residues. The anticancer activity of ScLCM was studied on the models of viability and invasion of 3D human melanoma SK-MEL-28, breast cancer T-47D, and colorectal carcinoma DLD-1 cells in comparison with native laminaran or its sulfated or aminated derivatives. ScLCM had the highest anticancer and anti-invasive effects among investigated polysaccharides. ScLCM significantly suppressed the viability and invasion of 3D SK-MEL-28 cells via the regulation of the activity of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP 9) and protein kinases of ERK/MAPK signaling pathway. These findings may contribute to the reported anticancer effects of algal polysaccharides' derivatives.

This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of composite scaffolds that combine fibroin derived from spider silk and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in the field of bone tissue engineering. Fibroin, obtained from spider silk, serves as a valuable biomaterial and constitutes the primary component of fibrous protein-based spider silk threads. To enhance the binding efficiency in bone formation after scaffold implantation, CMC was integrated into fibroin, aiming to improve the injectability properties of the scaffold in bone substitutes.

Natural polysaccharides with excellent biocompatibility are considered ideal materials for repairing diabetic foot ulcer. However, diabetic foot ulcer is often accompanied by decreased muscle function, even resulting in muscle atrophy. During wound repair, monitoring muscle function at the wound site in real time can identify the decreased muscle strength timely, which is crucial for precise wound rehabilitation.

Facilitating swift burn wound healing while effectively preventing scar formation continues to be a considerable challenge in medical practice. In this study, an injectable carboxymethyl chitosan/oxidized dextran/polyvinylpyrrolidone/dopamine (COPD) hydrogel was designed for the effective sequentially promotion of burn wound healing and inhibition of scar formation. The COPD hydrogel precursor solution was injected into the burn wound via a double-barreled syringe and transformed into an adherent hydrogel within 25 s.

Full-thickness burn wounds in diabetes often present significant challenges in terms of timely progression of healing and even mortality. Multifunctional dressings that possess strong absorptivity and mechanical property while effectively regulating inflammation and promoting angiogenesis is therefore crucial. We have developed a novel sponge (CCGE) comprising carboxymethyl chitosan, gelatin, and glycerin for the purpose of promoting accelerated healing of scald wounds in diabetic rats.

As a natural cationic polymer material, the application of chitosan hydrogel for bone tissue engineering has been greatly limited due to its poor mechanical strength. Enzymatic mineralization has drawn increased attention to effectively improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels. In this study, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) hydrogels cross-linked with different concentrations of genipin (2.
