In this study, we aim to evaluate the chemical characteristics, and nutritional quality of raw meat from broiler chicken fed a black soldier fly larvae meal. Three hundred twenty female broiler chicks were divided into four dietary treatments (8 replicates/treatments). Birds were fed maggot meal at 0%, 4%, 8%, and 12%. At 42 days of age, 16 birds/treatment were randomly selected and slaughtered. The chemical characteristics and nutritional quality of the meat were assessed. Abdominal fat, intramuscular lipid levels, and cholesterol levels increased (p in chicken-fed larvae meal. The latter had a higher level of mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids but a lower level of omega 3 (ω3) compared to the control. The atherogenicity index (AI) and the thrombogenicity index (TI) decreased with maggot meal incorporation. The unsaturation index was better at 4% and 8% maggot meal. Chickens fed with 8% maggot meal would present less risk for cardiovascular health.

Fishmeal (FM) is a key component of commercial fish feeds, but due its unsustainable supply, the search for quality alternatives of FM has become a significant area of investigation worldwide. The insect-based proteins such as black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are being recognized as an alternative ingredient. However, anti-nutritional factors in these alternatives may negatively affect nutrient utilization in fish.

Black Soldier Fly larvae (BSFL) are a promising and sustainable alternative to obtain proteins. Due to their high growth rate and ability to use different substrates as feeding stocks, BSFL can be also used to valorize food waste. Thus, the aim of this research was to unravel the potential use of Spent Coffee Grounds (SCG) and blood meal alone or mixed as feedstocks for BSFL and the nutritional changes for BSFL meal, especially after simulated human in vitro digestion and fermentation.

Background: larval meal (ZLM) is a high-quality feed supplement with potential activities that can improve fish growth performance and promote meat quality. However, there have been limited recent studies investigating the metabolic effects of ZLM. Therefore, this study aims to uncover the metabolomic mechanism through which ZLM improves tilapia meat flavor using metabolomic strategies.

In this study, we investigated the influence of the inclusion of Tenebrio molitor (TM) larvae meal in the diet on the diversity and structure of the bacterial community in the caecal content of Barbary partridges. A total of 36 partridges, selected randomly for slaughter from 54 animals, were divided equally into three treatment groups, including the control group (C) with a diet containing corn-soybean meal and two experimental groups, in which 25% (TM25) and 50% (TM50) of the soybean meal protein was replaced by the meal from TM larvae. After slaughtering, the bacterial community of the 30 caecal samples (10 samples per each experimental group) was analysed by high-throughput sequencing using the V4-V5 region of the 16 S rRNA gene.
