Sarcopenia is an emerging issue, but there is no universal consensus regarding its screening and diagnosis, especially regarding the influence of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 new definition on the prevalence of community-dwelling adults. To compare the prevalence of sarcopenia between the 2019 and 2014 definitions, a cross-sectional study including 606 normal nutritional status subjects (203 men/403 women; mean age 63.3 ± 10.0 years) was performed. Sarcopenic parameters, including calf circumference, grip strength, 6-m gait speed, and bioelectrical-impedance-analysis-derived skeletal mass index (SMI), were evaluated. According to the 2019 AWGS definition, the prevalence of possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia among community-dwelling adults was 7.4 and 2.8%, respectively. There were highly consistent findings regarding sarcopenia between the 2019 and 2014 AWGS definitions according to Cohen's kappa coefficient (0.668). However, the prevalence of possible sarcopenia according to 2014 and 2019 AWGS in males increased 7.9%; in contrast, sarcopenia decreased from 7.4 to 3.7% in females ( < 0.001). In conclusion, the AWGS 2019 definition is more convenient for sarcopenia case screening and remains considerably consistent in sarcopenia identification in community-dwelling adults in Taiwan. The discordance of possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia by sex is a concern.

Background: The metabolic score for visceral fat (METS-VF) is a recently identified index for evaluating visceral fat, also referred to as abdominal obesity. The skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) serves as a critical measure for assessing muscle mass and sarcopenia. Both obesity and the reduction of muscle mass can significantly affect human health.

Background: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a common therapy for many hematologic malignancies. While advances in transplant practice have improved cancer-specific outcomes, multiple and debilitating long term physical and psychologic effects remain. Patients undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (allo-BMT) are often critically ill at initial diagnosis and with necessary sequential treatments become increasingly frail and deconditioned.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, is frequently associated with musculoskeletal complications, including sarcopenia and osteoporosis, which substantially impair patient quality of life. Despite these clinical observations, the molecular mechanisms linking AD to bone loss remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we examined the femoral bone microarchitecture and transcriptomic profiles of APP/PS1 transgenic mouse models of AD to elucidate the disease's impact on bone pathology and identify potential gene candidates associated with bone deterioration.

Sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and function, is a significant contributor to increased frailty and mortality in the elderly. Currently, no FDA-approved treatment exists for sarcopenia. Here, we identified norharmane (NR), a β-carboline alkaloid, as a potential therapeutic agent for mitigating muscle aging.

Insulin resistance, a hallmark of type 2 diabetes, accelerates muscle breakdown and impairs energy metabolism. However, the role of Ubiquitin Specific Peptidase 2 (USP2), a key regulator of insulin resistance, in sarcopenia remains unclear. Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor γ (PPARγ) plays a critical role in regulating muscle atrophy.
