Environmental enrichment, that is making the environment of animals more complex, was first designed to enhance the welfare and cognitive abilities of captive animals, and was more recently applied to farm animals. Enrichments can be sensory, physical, social, occupational, feeding-based, or a mix of these, with a view to improve animals' welfare. We posit that enrichments share the common factor of providing information to animals so that enrichment is all about providing the animal with a way to acquire information by interacting with the environment.

Tail docking is a husbandry practice widely incorporated in sheep farms around the world. It is an irreversible mutilation that impairs animal welfare, both immediately and in the longer term. The defence of tail docking as a practice is centred around the perception that doing so contributes to the promotion of local hygiene, allowing the use of the wool, facilitating reproductive management and reducing the chances of myiasis, a disease caused by the invasion of blowfly larvae in the tissues of warm-blooded animals.

In this paper, we conduct a case study analysis of the National Women in Agriculture Association (NWIAA), an international, Black women-led farm assistance organization founded in 2008 and based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Drawing on the Culture-Centered Approach (CCA) and grounded in interviews and observational fieldwork, we center the perspectives of NWIAA chapter leaders ( = 16) to examine how they describe motivations for farming, challenge power inequities, engage with intersectional barriers, and develop locally situated solutions across agricultural and community health contexts. The analysis argues that Black women farmer's historical lived experiences, political voice, and shared deep-rooted agricultural knowledge provide an innovative and emancipatory praxis for rethinking health communication intervention approaches that address food system-generated disparities.
