AI Article Synopsis

  • Lettuce is a major leafy vegetable in Greece, but an emerging foliar disease caused by a specific pathogen has been identified in commercial farms.
  • Researchers studied thirty isolates from infected lettuce, using both morphological identification and genetic sequencing to understand their pathogenicity.
  • A new RT-qPCR assay was developed to specifically detect the pathogen in soil samples, proving effective as it did not amplify DNA from other common soilborne fungi.

Article Abstract

Lettuce is the most commonly cultivated leafy vegetable in Greece, available in the market throughout the year. In this study, an emerging foliar disease observed in commercial farms has been associated to the pathogen , a member of the species complex (FIESC). Thirty isolates obtained from symptomatic lettuce plants were identified on the basis of morphology and evaluated for their pathogenicity. The isolates were further characterized using amplification and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed region (ITS-rDNA), and of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (), calmodulin (), beta-tubulin (), and small subunit () genes. Moreover, a novel RT-qPCR assay was developed, designing a primer pair and a probe based on the sequences. This assay showed high specificity, amplifying DNA samples, while no amplification product was observed from samples of other common soilborne fungi. The generated RT-qPCR assay could be a useful tool for the detection and quantification of in soil samples deriving from fields cultivated with lettuce and other leafy vegetables, hosts of this specific pathogen.

State Key Laboratory of Herbage Improvement and Grassland Agro-Ecosystems, College of Ecology, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, China.

Shrub encroachment into grasslands poses a global concern, impacting species biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Yet, the effect of shrub encroachment on herbaceous diseases and the dependence of that effect on climatic factors remain ambiguous. This study spans over 4,000 km, examining significant variability in temperature and precipitation.

Biostimulants stimulate plant growth and tolerance to salinity stress, which creates unfavorable conditions for plant growth from emergence to harvest; however, little is known about their roles in triggering salt tolerance. Therefore, the study aimed to determine how applying a foliar plant-derived biostimulant (Aminolom Enzimatico® 24%) affects the growth (leaf area, biomass weight, root diameter, root fresh weight, and water-soluble dry matter), physiology (chlorophyll content, electrolyte leakage, cell membrane stability, and relative water content), and stomata of the lower and upper parts of leaves in radish plants ( L.) under salinity stress.

The management of micronutrients, such as boron (B) and zinc (Zn), is critical for plant growth and crop yields. One method of rapid intervention crop management to mitigate nutritional deficiency is the foliar supply of B and Zn. Our study investigates the effect of foliar-supplied B and Zn availability on the global transcriptional modulation in soybean (Glycine max).

Nano-biochar considers a versatile and valuable sorbent to enhance plant productivity by improving soil environment and emerged as a novel solution for environmental remediation and sustainable agriculture in modern era. In this study, roles of foliar applied nanobiochar colloidal solution (NBS) on salt stressed tomato plants were investigated. For this purpose, NBS was applied (0%, 1% 3% and 5%) on two groups of plants (control 0 mM and salt stress 60 mM).

To understand the interactions of entomopathogenic fungi with forage plants and their influence on associated herbivorous, we evaluated the influence of endophytic colonization with three isolates (CEPAF_ENT 25, CEPAF_ENT 27, and IBCB 425) of Metarhizium anisopliae on Cynodon dactylon, regarding the biological and behavioral aspects of Collaria scenica, an emerging sucking pest in pastoral systems in Brazil. The application of suspensions at the base of plant (drench) was effective in promoting endophytic colonization, especially in the roots, with emphasis on isolates CEPAF_ENT25 and CEPAF_ENT27. Despite the significant reduction in damage caused by C.
