Hydrophobically-modified silica-coated gold nanorods are presented here as multifunctional theranostic agents. A single modification both increases two-photon fluorescence and promotes cavitation-based acoustic signal for imaging. A two-fold greater release of small molecule drugs was observed under ultrasound-mediated conditions as compared to passive release without ultrasound.

The assembly of hybrid nanoparticles is a pioneering route for developing nanoscale functional devices, enabling breakthroughs in various fields, including electronics, photonics, energy, sensing, and biomedical applications. Here, we focus on the templated assembly of nano-sized colloidal systems using a combination of silica-coated superparamagnetic beads (MBs) and polymer-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) or silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). These hybrid nanoparticles introduce new functionalities that allow them to be used as nanomachines with numerous possible applications.

This paper explores a novel synthesis and characterization of silica-coated gold nanorods (AuNRs) embedding a highly emissive cyclometalated iridium(III) complex, denoted as Ir. We investigate the optical properties and the interplay between the metal compound and gold plasmon, observing how the emission of Ir incorporated into the nanoparticles shows two emission bands, one in the blue and the other in the green-orange range of the visible spectrum. To obtain a clearer picture of what we were observing, we synthesized analogous nanosystems, from which it was possible to highlight the effect of different features.

Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of global mortality, highlighting the need for accurate diagnostic tools and the detection of specific cardiac biomarkers. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has proved to be a promising alternative diagnostic tool to detect relevant biomarkers compared to traditional methods. To our knowledge, SERS methodology has never been used to detect galectin-3 (Gal-3), a crucial biomarker for cardiovascular conditions.
