There have been five major mass extinctions and some minor mass extinctions of animals since early animal diversification 540-520 Myr ago. It is said that a sixth mass extinction is already underway. However, the future extinction magnitude has not been quantitatively estimated. Here, I show that the sixth major mass extinction (defined as > 60% species loss) will be avoided, but a minor mass extinction, 20-50% animal species loss (1% now), will occur when humans cause nuclear war and/or fail to stop increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, pollution, and deforestation until 2060-2080 CE. When humans decrease GHG emissions, pollution, and deforestation in 40 years and prevent nuclear war in the future, 10-15% animal species loss will occur. Humans should stop not only industrial GHG emissions but also deforestation, environmental pollution, and nuclear war to prevent this mass extinction. When humans fail to stop these processes, significant decreases in biodiversity and the human population and a collapse of ecological balance will occur on Earth.

The soybean aphid () is an invasive insect pest that continues to cause large-scale damage to soybean crops in the North Central United States. Recent empirical evidence points to differential fitness in the pestiferous aphid biotypes under abiotic stresses such as flooding. As climate change predicts increased flooding in the North Central United States, mathematical models that incorporate such factors are required to better inform pest management strategies.

Pelage coloration, which serves numerous functions, is crucial to the evolution of behavior, physiology, and habitat preferences of mammals. However, little is known about the coloration of Mesozoic mammaliaforms that coevolved with dinosaurs. In this study, we used a dataset of melanosome (melanin-containing organelle) morphology and quantitatively measured hair colors from 116 extant mammals to reliably reconstruct the coloration of six Mesozoic mammaliaforms, including a previously undescribed euharamiyidan.

Patterns of extinction risk can vary across taxa, with species of some groups being particularly vulnerable to extinction. Rails (Aves: Rallidae) represent one of the most extreme yet well-documented cases of mass extinction within a modern vertebrate group. Between 54 and 92% of rail species became extinct following waves of human contact during both the Holocene and the Anthropocene eras, and a third of the extant species are currently threatened or near-threatened.
