Disease Modules Associated with Unfavorable Sleep Patterns and Their Genetic Determinants: A Prospective Cohort Study of the UK Biobank.

Phenomics

October 2024

Mental Health Center and West China Biomedical Big Data Center, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610000 China.

Unlabelled: Despite the established associations between sleep-related traits and major diseases, comprehensive assessment on affected disease modules and their genetic determinants is lacking. Using multiple correspondence analysis and the k-means clustering algorithm, 235,826 eligible participants were clustered into distinct unfavorable sleep patterns [short sleep duration ( = 10,073), snoring (22,419), insomnia (102,771), insomnia and snoring (62,909)] and favorable sleep pattern groups (37,654). The associations of unfavorable sleep patterns with 134 diseases were estimated using Cox regression models; and comorbidity network analyses were applied for disease module identification.

Background: We have previously developed and reported on a procedure for estimating the purported benefits of immunity mandates using a novel variant of the number needed to treat (NNT) which we called the number needed to isolate (NNI). Here we demonstrate its broader properties as a useful population health metric.

Main Body: The NNI is analogous to the number needed to treat (NNT = 1/ARR), except the absolute risk reduction (ARR) is the absolute transmission risk in a specific population.

Detection of OXA-23-producing Proteus mirabilis in Switzerland.

Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis

December 2024

Medical and Molecular Microbiology, Faculty of Science and Medicine, University of Fribourg, Fribourg, Switzerland.

Proteus mirabilis is a Gram-negative bacterium found in the environment and also forms part of the commensal flora in the gastrointestinal tract of both humans and animals. P. mirabilis can cause a wide variety of infections, however it does not harbor any intrinsic β-lactamase genes and as such usually exhibits full susceptibility to β-lactams with the exception of imipenem, to which it is naturally resistant.

Objective: Outpatient antimicrobial therapy works but often requires in-person oversight. Advancements enable seamless communication. We used instant messaging to track adherence, cost, efficacy, and adverse events for outpatient intramuscular antibiotic therapy.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in elderly patients are frequently attributed to age-related altered pharmacokinetics and the complexities of polypharmacy to manage multiple chronic conditions, making elderly patients more susceptible to ADRs. The following is a case report of an 80-year-old female patient with systemic symptoms of chest pain, low blood sugar, mouth ulcers, and concentrates on peripheral edema due to nitrate vasodilator isosorbide mononitrate (ISMN). She had hypertension, diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
