Environmental conditions are crucial factors that influence communication systems and affect animal behavior. Research in the field of biotremology has improved our understanding of insect behavior, ecology, and evolution. However, the interactions between vibrational signaling and environmental factors are less studied, mainly because of technical issues faced in field trials. We therefore developed and tested an approach to investigate the effect of abiotic factors on insect vibrational signaling and explored its implementation as a monitoring tool for insect vibrational signals, using a vineyard as an agroecosystem model. Our results showed a significant decrease in insect signaling activity during unsuitable conditions of high temperature and wind velocity. We determined for the first time, the daily signaling pattern of the two insect pests, and , in natural conditions. Biotremology techniques could be profitably used to monitor not only the presence of target pest species but also the biodiversity associated with vibrational signaling insects. In particular, the method implemented in this study could be used as a tool to compare the quality of cultivated areas under different management systems.

Significance: Maximal safe resection of brain tumors can be performed by neurosurgeons through the use of accurate and practical guidance tools that provide real-time information during surgery. Current established adjuvant intraoperative technologies include neuronavigation guidance, intraoperative imaging (MRI and ultrasound), and 5-ALA for fluorescence-guided surgery.

Aim: We have developed intraoperative Raman spectroscopy as a real-time decision support system for neurosurgical guidance in brain tumors.

Wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) and noise reduction both play important roles in hearing aids. WDRC provides level-dependent amplification so that the level of sound produced by the hearing aid falls between the hearing threshold and the highest comfortable level of the listener, while noise reduction reduces ambient noise with the goal of improving intelligibility and listening comfort and reducing effort. In most current hearing aids, noise reduction and WDRC are implemented sequentially, but this may lead to distortion of the amplitude modulation patterns of both the speech and the noise.

State Key Laboratory of Precision Manufacturing for Extreme Service Performance, College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Central South University, Changsha 410083, China.

Vibration sensors are integral to a multitude of engineering applications, yet the development of low-cost, easily assembled devices remains a formidable challenge. This study presents a highly sensitive flexible vibration sensor, based on the piezoresistive effect, tailored for the detection of high-dynamic-range vibrations and accelerations. The sensor's design incorporates a polylactic acid (PLA) housing with cavities and spherical recesses, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane, and electrodes that are positioned above.

A moving ground-target recognition system can monitor suspicious activities of pedestrians and vehicles in key areas. Currently, most target recognition systems are based on devices such as fiber optics, radar, and vibration sensors. A system based on vibration sensors has the advantages of small size, low power consumption, strong concealment, easy installation, and low power consumption.

Synchronous vibrations, which are caused by periodic excitations, can have a severe impact on the service life of impellers. Blade Tip Timing (BTT) is a promising technique for monitoring synchronous vibrations due to its non-intrusive nature and ability to monitor all blades at once. BTT generally employs a Once-per-Revolution (OPR) sensor that is mounted on the shaft for blade identification and deflection calculation.
