Many patients suffer from hip or knee osteoarthritis and elect to pursue total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Though perioperative risk is an inherent component of surgery, calculators that assess the risk of complications following TJA can help both surgeons and patients make informed decisions about the risk of surgery and aid in shared decision-making discussions. The inclusion of race in a risk calculator for readmission after TJA is flawed and unacceptable because a patient's race does not increase their risk of a complication after total joint replacement.

Alzheimers Dement
December 2024
University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA.
Background: Blood pressure (BP) management is an accessible therapeutic target for dementia prevention. BP variability (BPV) is a newer aspect of BP control recently associated with cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD), independent of traditionally targeted mean BP levels. Most of this work has relied on largely non-Hispanic White study samples in observational cohorts.

Method: To investigate the relation of AHT with change in cognitive function and postmortem brain pathology, we evaluated 4,207 older persons without known dementia at enrollment and a subset of 1880 participants who died and came to autopsy.

University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA.
Background: Recruitment challenges in people with and without Down syndrome (DS) can delay research progress and risk sample bias. This study identified and quantified differences in research attitudes across populations of research enrollment decision-makers for individuals with and without DS.
Method: We compared scores on the Research Attitudes Questionnaire (RAQ) of individuals enrolled in two recruitment registries: the UCI Consent to Contact [C2C (N = 4818)] and DS-Connect (N = 976).

Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA.
Background: Black/African American adults (B/AAs) are 64% more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) than non-Hispanic White adults (NHWs), and risk factors, including non-biological determinants, are not fully delineated. Social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status and lifetime discrimination, are associated with cognitive decline and increased AD risk. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships of a perceived discrimination measure with sociodemographic characteristics and cognitive function in a racially diverse cohort of middle-aged adults with a parental history of AD.

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Background: Education is a recognized modifiable dementia risk factor. To boost cognitive reserve and reduce dementia risk in Brazil's vulnerable populations, we conceived a literacy program (PROAME trial) targeting low-educated adults, aiming to explore how executive function and individual differences influence program effectiveness.
Method: We screened 130 adults, with 108 meeting enrollment criteria.
