Challenging the financial capture of urban greening.

Published: November 2022

Urban greening is critical for human health and climate adaptation and mitigation goals, but its financing tends to prioritize economic growth imperatives. This often results in elite value and rent capture and unjust greening outcomes. We argue that cities can, however, take action to ensure more socially just impacts of green financing.

Factors influencing spatiotemporal variability of NO concentration in urban area: a GIS and remote sensing-based approach.

Environ Monit Assess

January 2025

Air Quality, Climate Change and Health (ACH) Lab, Department of Public Health and Informatics, Jahangirnagar University, 1342, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The growing global attention on urban air quality underscores the need to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of nitrogen dioxide (NO) and its environmental and anthropogenic factors, particularly in cities like Dhaka (Gazipur), Bangladesh, which suffers from some of the world's worst air quality. This study analysed NO concentrations in Gazipur from 2019 to 2022 using Sentinel-5P TROPOMI data on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Correlations and regression analysis were done between NO levels and various environmental factors, including land surface temperature (LST), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), land use and land cover (LULC), population density, road density, settlement density, and industry density.

In North America, raccoon rabies virus (RRV) is a public health concern due to its potential for rapid spread, maintenance in wildlife, and impact on human and domesticated animal health. RRV is an endemic zoonotic pathogen throughout the eastern USA. In 1991, an outbreak of RRV in Fairfield County, Connecticut, spread through the state and eventually throughout the Northeast and into Canada.

A thorny tale: The origin and diversification of Cirsium (Compositae).

Autonomous University of Barcelona, Systematics and Evolution of Vascular Plants (UAB) - Associated Unit to CSIC by IBB - Cerdanyola del Vallès, Spain.

Widely distributed plant genera offer insights into biogeographic processes and biodiversity. The Carduus-Cirsium group, with over 600 species in eight genera, is diverse across the Holarctic regions, especially in the Mediterranean Basin, Southwest Asia, Japan, and North America. Despite this diversity, evolutionary and biogeographic processes within the group, particularly for the genus Cirsium, remain underexplored.

Global climate change and rapid urbanization have increasingly intensified extreme rainfall events and surface runoff, posing significant challenges to urban hydrological security. Synergetic Grey-Green Infrastructure (SGGI) has been widely applied to enhance stormwater management in urban areas. However, current research primarily focused on optimizing and evaluating either grey infrastructure (GREI) or green infrastructure (GI) under single rainfall event, neglecting the non-stationary impacts of long-term climate change on infrastructure performance.
