Despite evidence indicating that self-esteem (SE) may be considered a precondition to subjective well-being (SWB), there are inconclusive findings regarding its developmental links with SWB. Considering the declines in SWB, the purpose of this study is to examine the developmental changes in SWB and its relationship with SE in early adolescence. The data of 11,231 adolescents aged 11 and 14 years old (50% females) from the Millennium Cohort Study were utilized. Latent mean comparison indicated that SWB declined substantially between 11 and 14 years old in the United Kingdom. Cross-lagged modelling showed that SWB was developmentally unstable and that SE predicted later changes in SWB, whereas SWB did not predict changes in SE. SWB declines in the United Kingdom are mostly linked to less satisfaction with secondary school contexts and peer relationships. In short, SE is an important factor that can contribute to adolescents' SWB. Implications for educational policy and practice are discussed.

Climate change, population growth, and agricultural intensification are increasing nitrogen (N) inputs, while driving the loss of inland water bodies that filter excess N. However, the interplay between N inputs and water body dynamics, and its implications for water quality remain poorly understood. Analyzing data from 1995 to 2015 across China, here, we find a 71% reduction in the area of small (<10 m) water bodies (SWB), primarily in high-N-input agricultural regions.

Experience shapes the brain as neural circuits can be modified by neural stimulation or the lack of it. The molecular mechanisms underlying structural circuit plasticity and how plasticity modifies behaviour are poorly understood. Subjective experience requires dopamine, a neuromodulator that assigns a value to stimuli, and it also controls behaviour, including locomotion, learning, and memory.

Background: We aimed to assess the effects of body mass index (BMI), activities of daily living (ADL), and subjective well-being (SWB) on cognitive impairment and propose dynamic risk prediction models for aging cognitive decline.
Methods: We leveraged the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 1998 to 2018. Cognitive status was measured using the Chinese Mini-Mental State Examination.

The thermodynamics of interactions between Cas12a, RNA, and DNA are important to understanding the molecular mechanisms governing CRISPR-Cas12a's specificity and function. In this study, we employed isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the binding properties and energetic contributions of Cas12a-crRNA complexes with single-stranded (ssDNA) and double-stranded (dsDNA) DNA substrates. ITC analyses revealed significant thermal effects during the interaction of Cas12a-crRNA with ssDNA but no detectable effects with dsDNA.

Wildlife managers and the public have expressed considerable interest in the use of contraception to help manage the populations of wild horses and burros ( and ). Field testing has shown that two preparations of the porcine zona pellucida (PZP) vaccine, a simple emulsion (ZonaStat-H) and PZP-22 (which supplements ZonaStat-H with a controlled-release component) effectively prevent pregnancy in individual mares and can substantially reduce population foaling rates. To determine whether some PZP preparations might have secondary effects that harm treated mares or their foals, we examined the effects of PZP-22 vaccinations and the follow-up boosters of either PZP-22 or ZonaStat-H on adult female body condition, foaling season, and foal mortality in two wild horse herds in the western USA, Cedar Mountains Herd Management Area, Utah (CM; 2008-2015), and Sand Wash Basin Herd Management Area, Colorado (SWB; 2008-2014).
