Transcatheter aortic valve replacement in surgical aortic valve is a safe and effective procedure to treat patients with failed bioprosthetic surgical valves at high risk for reoperation. Performing bioprosthetic valve fracture has been shown to improve postprocedural hemodynamics of TAVR in surgical aortic valve replacement. However, specific complications related to valve fracture are becoming more common. ().

Simultaneous transcatheter aortic valve implantation and femoral osteosynthesis: a case report.

JA Clin Rep

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology, Japanese Red Cross Kumamoto Hospital, 2-1-1, Nagamine-Minami, Higashi-Ku, Kumamoto, 861-8520, Japan.

Background: Simultaneous cardiac and non-cardiac surgeries can be beneficial for patients, but there are still few reports on this approach.

Case Presentation: A 90-year-old woman was diagnosed with a femoral trochanteric fracture and severe aortic stenosis. A heart team conference decided to perform transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and femoral osteosynthesis under general anesthesia on the same day.

Aneurysm rupture is a life-threatening event, yet its underlying mechanisms remain largely unclear. This study investigated the fracture properties of the thoracic aneurysmatic aorta (TAA) using the symmetry-constraint Compact Tension (symconCT) test and compared results to native and enzymatic-treated porcine aortas' tests. With age, the aortic stiffness increased, and tissues ruptured at lower fracture energy [Formula: see text].

Paradoxical Agitation and Masseter Spasm During Propofol Procedural Sedation: A Case Report.

Clin Pract Cases Emerg Med

November 2024

Christiana Care Health System, Department of Emergency Medicine, Newark, Delaware.

Introduction: Propofol is an anesthetic agent commonly used in emergency department (ED) procedural sedation. It is often preferred in orthopedic procedures because of its muscle-relaxing properties. Rarely, however, it can induce agitation and muscle hypertonicity.

Introduction: Although myocardial injury is common after blunt chest trauma, tricuspid valve injury associated with traumatic atrial septal defect resulting in acute hypoxia is an infrequent event. We report an unusual case of blunt chest trauma referred to us for unexplained hypoxemia, emphasizing the unusual nature of injury and the importance of comprehensive cardiac evaluation in such cases.

Case Report: A 35-year-old male presented to the emergency department after falling from a tree from an approximate height of 15 feet.

There is limited evidence regarding the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the epidemiology of thoracic and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to investigate changes in medical visits for these conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed the entire Korean population (~50 million) for monthly medical visits for 15 common thoracic and cardiovascular conditions, including pneumothorax, large bullae, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, thymoma, empyema, mediastinitis, esophageal rupture, multiple rib fractures, hemothorax, rib mass, varicose vein, pectus excavatum, aortic dissection, aortic aneurysm, and valve disease from January 2019 to December 2021.
