Solar-driven photocatalysis offers an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach for the degradation of organic pollutants in water without chemical additives, but the low specific surface area and adsorption capacity of common photocatalysts restricts the surface reactions with the contaminants. Herein, we hypercrosslinked polymer layers on TiO-graphene surface to enlarge the specific surface area from 136 to 988 m/g, leading to a high adsorption capacity of sulfadiazine as 54.3 mg/g, which is 15.5 times that of TiO-graphene (3.5 mg/g). The adsorption kinetics reveals the combination of physical and chemical adsorption by porous benzene-based polymer for sulfadiazine enrichment. Besides, the polymer layers with broad light absorption enable the composite to function efficiently as visible-light-driven photocatalysts. Thus, the as-designed composite exhibits excellent performance for sulfadiazine removal by integrating the adsorptive and photocatalytic processes, especially for the diluted sulfadiazine solution. More importantly, the porous polymer layer can function as a filter for weakening the interference of TiO surface with the natural matters from complex water matrices. Based on the identification of dominant reactive species, the possible attacking pathway and the sulfadiazine subsequent degradation are presented. Further, the enhanced adsorption and photodegradation efficiency can also be achieved for the removal of other typical pollutants such as 4-chlorophenol and methylene blue. This study highlights an adsorption-enhanced-degradation mechanism for water pollutants that can direct the design of high-performance photocatalysts under visible light.

Recent theory and experiments have shown how the buildup of a high-concentration polymer layer at a one-dimensional solvent-air interface can lead to an evaporation rate that scales with time as and that is insensitive to the ambient humidity. Using phase field modelling we show that this scaling law constitutes a naturally emerging robust regime, diffusion-limited evaporation (DLE). This regime dominates the dynamical state diagram of the system, which also contains regions of constant and arrested evaporation, confirming and extending understanding of recent experimental observations and theoretical predictions.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) dispersed on support materials exhibit exceptional catalytic properties that can be fine-tuned through interactions between the single atoms and the support. However, selectively controlling the spatial location of single metal atoms while simultaneously harmonizing their coordination environment remains a significant challenge. Here, we present a phenolic-mediated interfacial anchoring (PIA) strategy to prepare SACs with Fe single atoms anchored on the surface of heteroatom-doped carbon nanospheres.

The permeability-selectivity trade-off in polymeric desalination membranes limits the efficiency and increases the costs of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration systems. Ultrathin contorted polyamide films with enhanced free volume demonstrate an impressive 8-fold increase in water permeance while maintaining equivalent salt rejection compared to conventional polyamide membranes made with -phenylenediamine and trimesoyl chloride monomers. The solution-based molecular layer-by-layer (mLbL) deposition technique employed for membrane fabrication sequentially reacts a shape-persistent contorted diamine monomer with a trimesoyl chloride monomer, forming highly cross-linked, dense polyamide networks while avoiding the kinetic and mass transfer limitations of traditional interfacial polymerization.

Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness, demands innovative and effective treatments that surpass the limitations of current drug and surgical interventions to lower intraocular pressure. This study describes the generation of cell-repellent hydrogel patches, their deposition on the ocular surface, and a photoinduced chemical binding between the patches and the collagens of the eye. The hydrophilic and protein-repellent hydrogel patch is composed of a copolymer made from dimethylacrylamide and a comonomer unit with anthraquinone moieties.
