Illicit drugs are a global burden, not only for society, but also for the various control authorities for which its rapid on-site detection remains a challenge. In this context, the potential of a voltammetric electronic tongue (ET) for the analysis of different drugs is evaluated herein. Concretely, the discrimination and identification of cocaine, heroin, 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methamphetamine and ketamine in self-prepared and real samples were attempted.

Article Synopsis
  • Sensor-based monitoring in milling can enhance productivity and workpiece quality while enabling machine automation, but its industrial deployment is challenging due to sensitivity requirements and minimal impact on operations.
  • The paper introduces a novel multi-sensory tool holder that includes a temperature sensor, triaxial accelerometer, and strain gauges to measure forces and vibrations near the cutting tool, featuring a self-sufficient power source and wireless data transmission.
  • Experiments conducted with various cutting parameters validate the system, revealing that bending moment and tangential acceleration signals are particularly effective in detecting dynamic instabilities like chatter.

Lipid nanoparticle technology-mediated therapeutic gene manipulation in the eyes.

Mol Ther Nucleic Acids

September 2024

State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Optometry and Visual Science, Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, No. 270, Xueyuan Road, Wenzhou, Zhejiang 325027, China.

Millions of people worldwide have hereditary genetic disorders, trauma, infectious diseases, or cancer of the eyes, and many of these eye diseases lead to irreversible blindness, which is a major public health burden. The eye is a relatively small and immune-privileged organ. The use of nucleic acid-based drugs to manipulate malfunctioning genes that target the root of ocular diseases is regarded as a therapeutic approach with great promise.

Due to their potential adverse health effects, some N-nitrosamines in drug products are strictly regulated with very low maximum daily intake limits. Nitrosamines can be formed from the reaction of nitrite and secondary or tertiary amines when both species co-exist in the drug synthesis or formulation process. One key strategy to mitigate nitrosamine risk in drugs is to select low-nitrite containing pharma excipients for formulation.
