Understanding the mechanisms by which chlorophylls are synthesized in the eggplant () fruit peel is of great relevance for eggplant breeding. A multi-parent advanced generation inter-cross (MAGIC) population and a germplasm collection have been screened for green pigmentation in the fruit peel and used to identify candidate genes for this trait. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) performed with 420 MAGIC individuals revealed a major association on chromosome 8 close to a gene similar to . Two variants in , predicted as having a high impact effect, were associated with the absence of fruit chlorophyll pigmentation in the MAGIC population, and a large deletion of 5.27 kb was found in two reference genomes of accessions without chlorophyll in the fruit peel. The validation of the candidate gene was performed by its sequencing in a set of MAGIC individuals and through its assembly in 277 accessions from the G2P-SOL eggplant core collection. Two additional mutations in associated with the lack of chlorophyll were identified in the core collection set. The phylogenetic analysis of reveals orthology within Solanaceae and suggests that specialization of genes occurred independently in Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae. A strong geographical differentiation was observed in the frequency of predominant mutations in , resulting in a lack of fruit chlorophyll pigmentation and suggesting that this phenotype may have arisen and been selected independently several times. This study represents the first identification of a major gene for fruit chlorophyll pigmentation in the eggplant fruit.

Effect of Meloidogyne incognita and Pseudomonas syringae pv. aptata (Psa) was observed singly, together and pre and post inoculations in 4 soil types on plant growth, parameters, chlorophyll, carotenoid and proline contents of beetroot (Beta vulgaris L). The present study aimed to investigate the impact of progressive drought stress (100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% of field capacity) on photosynthetic light reactions of tomato plants. The imposed drought caused a gradual reduction in leaf RWC leading to a decline in pigment concentration and growth indices. Significant alteration in the OJIP fluorescence transient curves and the formation of specific fluorescence bands (L, K, J, H, and G) gradually increased as drought severity increased.

The light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) in green plants exhibits highly efficient excitation energy transfer (EET). A comprehensive understanding of the EET mechanism in LHCII requires quantum chemical, molecular dynamics (MD), and statistical mechanics calculations that can adequately describe pigment molecules in heterogeneous environments. Herein, we develop MD simulation parameters that accurately reproduce the quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical energies of both the ground and excited states of all chlorophyll (Chl) molecules in membrane embedded LHCII.
