The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in a two-dimensional rectangular lattice features gapless or gapped Dirac cones with topological edge states along specific peripheries. While such a simple model has been recently realized in photonic/acoustic lattices and electric circuits, its material realization in condensed matter systems is still lacking. Here, we study the atomic and electronic structure of a rectangular Si lattice on Ag(001) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. We demonstrate that the Si lattice hosts gapped Dirac cones at the Brillouin zone corners. Our tight-binding analysis reveals that the Dirac bands can be described by a 2D SSH model with anisotropic polarizations. The gap of the Dirac cone is driven by alternative hopping amplitudes in one direction and staggered potential energies in the other one and hosts topological edge states. Our results establish an ideal platform to explore the rich physical properties of the 2D SSH model.

Polarizability, plasmons and damping in pseudospin-1 gapped materials with a flat band.

The subject of our present investigation is the collective electronic properties of various types of pseudospin-1 Dirac-cone materials with a flat band and finite bandgaps in their low-energy spectra. Specifically, we have calculated the dynamical polarization, plasmon dispersions, as well as their decay rates due to Landau damping and presented the closed-form analytical expressions for the wave function overlaps for both the gapped dice lattice and the Lieb lattice. The gapped dice lattice is a special case of the more general-T3model such that its band structure is symmetric and the flat band remains dispersionless.

Orbital-selective effect of spin reorientation on the Dirac fermions in a non-charge-ordered kagome ferromagnet FeGe.

Kagome magnets provide a fascinating platform for the realization of correlated topological quantum phases under various magnetic ground states. However, the effect of the magnetic spin configurations on the characteristic electronic structure of the kagome-lattice layer remains elusive. Here, utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we report the spectroscopic evidence for the spin-reorientation effect of a kagome ferromagnet FeGe, which is composed solely of kagome planes.

In a 2D electron system (2DES) the breaking of the inversion, time-reversal and bulk crystal-field symmetries is interlaced with the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) triggering exotic quantum phenomena. Here, epitaxial engineering is used to design and realize a 2DES characterized simultaneously by ferromagnetic order, large Rashba SOC and hexagonal band warping at the (111) interfaces between LaAlO, EuTiO, and SrTiO insulators. The 2DES displays anomalous quantum corrections to the magneto-conductance driven by the time-reversal-symmetry breaking occurring below the magnetic transition temperature.

We investigate the nature of the topological quantum phase transition between the gapless and gapped Kitaev quantum spin liquid phases away from the exactly solvable point. The transition is driven by anisotropy of the Kitaev couplings. At the critical point, the two Dirac points of the gapless Majorana modes merge, resulting in the formation of a semi-Dirac point with quadratic and linear band touching directions.

Theoretically predicted materials are often synthesized in low yields, and unexpected relationships are often encountered between the target materials and byproducts. Recently, two-dimensional boron materials proposed on the basis of model simulations and first principles calculations and possessing abundant atomic structures have attracted considerable interest. Borophane or the hydrogen boride (HB) sheet has been predicted to be the Dirac nodal semimetal when it has a boron network of nonsymmorphic symmetry.
