Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials provide an ideal platform for investigating novel magnetism and spin behavior in low-dimensional systems while being restricted by the deficiency of accurate bottom-up synthesis. To overcome this difficulty, a facile and universal flux-assisted growth (FAG) method is proposed to synthesize the multicomponent FeGeTe ( = 3-5) with different Fe contents and even alloyed with hetero metal atoms. This one-to-one method ensures the stoichiometry consistency from the FeGeTe and MFeGeTe (M = Co, Ni) bulk crystal precursors to the 2D nanosheets, with controllable composition. Tuning the growth temperatures can provide thickness-tunable products. Changeable magnetic properties of FeGeTe and alloyed CoFeGeTe are substantiated by the superconducting quantum interference device and reflective magnetic circular dichroism. This method generates thickness-tunable high-crystallinity FeGeTe samples without phase separation and exhibits a high tolerance to different substrates and a large temperature window, providing a new avenue to synthesize and explore such multicomponent 2D magnets and even the alloyed ones.

Manipulating Magnetic Damping of Fe/GeTe Heterostructures by Band Engineering.

Understanding and manipulating magnetic damping, particularly in magnetic heterostructures, is crucial for fundamental research, versatile engineering, and optimization. Although magnetic damping can be enhanced by the band hybridization between ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic materials at the interface, the contribution of individual subbands on the hybridized bands to magnetic damping is fully unexplored. Here, it is found that magnetic damping α is modified by the Fermi level in Fe/GeTe heterostructures via Bi doping.

We have experimentally investigated the mechanism of the exchange bias in 2D van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets by means of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) together with the dynamical magnetization property. The temperature dependence of the AC susceptibility with its frequency response indicates a glassy transition of the magnetic property for the Te-rich FeGeTe vdW ferromagnet. We also found that the irreversible temperature dependence in the anomalous Hall voltage follows the de Almeida-Thouless line.

The understanding and manipulation of anisotropic Gilbert damping is crucial for both fundamental research and versatile engineering and optimization. Although several works on anisotropic damping have been reported, no direct relationship between the band structure and anisotropic damping was established. Here, we observed an anisotropic damping in Fe/GeTe manipulated by the symmetric band structures of GeTe via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Spin-Dependent Transport in van der Waals Magnetic Tunnel Junctions with FeGeTe Electrodes.

van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, stacking different two-dimensional materials, have opened up unprecedented opportunities to explore new physics and device concepts. Especially interesting are recently discovered two-dimensional magnetic vdW materials, providing new paradigms for spintronic applications. Here, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we investigate the spin-dependent electronic transport across vdW magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) composed of FeGeTe ferromagnetic electrodes and a graphene or hexagonal boron nitride (-BN) spacer layer.

The creation of 2D van der Waals materials with ferromagnetism above room temperature is an essential goal toward their practical utilization in spin-based applications. Recent studies suggest that intercalating lithium in exfoliated flakes of the ferromagnet FeGeTe induces a nonzero magnetization at ∼ 300 K. However, the nanoscale nature of such experiments precludes precise observations of structural and chemical changes upon intercalation.
