Background: The prevalence of zinc deficiency is high in patients with chronic liver disease, but few studies have hitherto explored the relationship between the serum zinc level and hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). This study aimed to assess the association between zinc deficiency and infectious complications, and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score in patients with HBV-related ACLF.

Methods: Patients with HBV-related ACLF from the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (Guangzhou, China) between January 2019 and December 2019 were retrospectively analysed in this study. Their demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were retrieved from the hospital information system and analysed. The Student's -test was used for normally distributed continuous variables between two groups and the Chi-square test was used for categorical data. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to identify independent parameters.

Results: A total of 284 patients were included in this study, including 205 liver cirrhosis and 79 non-cirrhosis patients. The proportion of patients with zinc deficiency was the highest (84.5%), followed by subclinical zinc deficiency (14.1%) and normal zinc level (1.4%). Patients in the zinc deficiency group had a higher MELD score than the subclinical zinc deficiency or normal zinc group (=0.021). Age, total bilirubin, and serum zinc level were independent factors for infection (<0.05). The serum zinc level in patients without complications at admission was significantly higher than that in patients with complications (=0.004). Moreover, the serum zinc level in patients with prothrombin time activity (PTA) of <20% was significantly lower than that in patients with 20%≤PTA<30% (=0.007) and that in patients with 30%≤PTA<40% (<0.001).

Conclusions: Zinc deficiency is common in patients with HBV-related ACLF. Zinc deficiency is closely associated with infectious complications and MELD score in patients with HBV-related ACLF.

Mammalian SLC39A13 promotes ER/Golgi iron transport and iron homeostasis in multiple compartments.

Iron is a potent biochemical, and accurate homeostatic control is orchestrated by a network of interacting players at multiple levels. Although our understanding of organismal iron homeostasis has advanced, intracellular iron homeostasis is poorly understood, including coordination between organelles and iron export into the ER/Golgi. Here, we show that SLC39A13 (ZIP13), previously identified as a zinc transporter, promotes intracellular iron transport and reduces intracellular iron levels.

Introduction Zinc deficiency (ZnD) impairs the development of acquired immunity and contributes to growth failure in children under five years of age. However, the prevalence of ZnD and its association with immunity in this age group in Uganda have not been well explored. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of ZnD and explore the associations between low serum zinc levels and total white blood cell count, differential cell counts, and levels of IL-1 and IL-2 in children aged 12 to 59 months.

Little is known about the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy in dissociative identity disorder (DID). Zinc is essential for proper brain function. Its deficiency can lead to mental health symptoms, possibly contributing to dissociation.

A small molecule modified UiO series MOFs for simultaneous detection of Fe and Zn.

Department of Chemistry, College of Sciences, Northeastern University, Shenyang, 110819, China. Electronic address:

Iron and zinc are two metal ions with important roles in biology, industry and the environment, however, the excess or deficiency of both Fe and Zn can have negative effects on organisms and environment. Therefore, the development of efficient method for simultaneous detection of Fe and Zn provides timely information on metal content, simplifies operations and improves efficiency. In this work, a small molecule (COOH-BPEA) of recognizing Zn modified the four metal-organic-framework (MOF) (UiO-66-X(66, OH, NH and OH/NH)) was developed for the simultaneous detection of Fe and Zn.

Studies of in situ plant response and adaptation to complex environmental stresses, are crucial for understanding the mechanisms of formation and functioning of ecosystems of anthropogenically transformed habitats. We study short- and long-term responses of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) and anti-oxidant capacity to complex abiotic stresses of common plants Calamagrostis epigejos and Solidago gigantea in semi-natural (C) and heavy metal contaminated habitats (LZ). We found significant differences in leaf pigment content between both plant species growing on LZ plots and their respective C populations.
