Adsorption and advanced oxidation processes, especially photocatalysis, are amongst the most common water treatment methodologies. Unfortunately, using each of these techniques independently does not fully eliminate the pollutants of diverse nature, which are present in wastewater. Here, an avenue for multifunctional materials for water treatment is opened by reporting for the first time the preparation, characterization, and study of the properties of a novel multifunctional nanocomposite with both adsorption and visible-light-driven photocatalysis abilities. These multifunctional nanocomposites, namely iron (II, III) oxide/poly(-isopropylacrylamide--methacrylic acid)/silver-titanium dioxide (FeO/P(NIPAM--MAA)/Ag-TiO), are prepared by combining magnetic polymeric microspheres (FeO/P(NIPAM--MAA)) with silver-decorated titanium dioxide nanoparticles (Ag-TiO NPs). Cationic dyes, such as basic fuchsin (BF), can be adsorbed by the nanocomposites thanks to the carboxylic groups of FeO/P(NIPAM--MAA) microspheres. Concomitantly, the presence of Ag-TiO NPs endows the system with the visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation ability toward antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (CIP) and norfloxacin (NFX). Furthermore, the proposed nanocomposites show antibacterial activity toward (), thanks to the presence of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). Due to the superparamagnetic properties of iron (II, III) oxide nanoparticles (FeO NPs), the nanocomposites can be also recycled and reused, after the cleaning process, by using an external magnetic field.

Carbon dots (CDs) mediated g-CN (CN) is a promising visible-light-driven semiconductor in catalyzing peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for aqueous contaminants remediation. However, the poor dispersibility of powered catalyst and its challenging recyclability impede their broader application. Herein, we embedded FeN bridge within the g-CN framework and immobilized g-CN gel beads (CA/FNCCN) through a 3D cross-linking process with sodium alginate.

Two dimensional β-ketoamine covalent organic frameworks (2D TP-COFs) are one category of promising metal-free catalysts for photocatalytic overall water splitting (OWS) because of their unusual stability and versatile electronic/optical properties. However, none of the currently reported TP-COFs can accomplish the hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) simultaneously without adding any sacrificial agents and cocatalysts. To address this challenging issue, we rationally designed 23 2D TP-COFs by regulating the linkage groups and comprehensively evaluated their OWS activity by using the first-principles method.

A highly versatile Z-scheme heterostructure, HoSmSbO/YbDyBiNbO (HYO), was synthesized using an ultrasonic-assisted solvent thermal method. The HYO heterojunction, composed of dual ABO compounds, exhibits superior separation of photogenerated carriers due to its efficient Z-scheme mechanism. The synergistic properties of HoSmSbO and YbDyBiNbO, particularly the excellent visible light absorption, enable HYO to achieve exceptional photocatalytic performance in the degradation of fenitrothion (FNT).

A series of Ag-loaded and oxygen vacancy (OV)-containing BiOBr/BiOI (Ag/BiOBr/BiOI) photocatalysts with varying Ag loading levels were synthesized via the solvothermal-photocatalytic reduction method. As confirmed via optical, photoelectrochemical, and 4-chlorophenol photodegradation experiments, a low Ag loading level significantly enhanced the photogenerated charge carrier (PCC) transfer on the BiOBr/BiOI semiconductor surface and the performance of Ag/BiOBr/BiOI photocatalysts, which was attributable to the synergism between the effect of OVs and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles. Additionally, BiOBr/BiOI heterojunctions facilitated efficient visible-light harvesting and PCC separation.

This study explores a sustainable method for synthesizing quinazoline derivatives through visible light-driven photocatalysis using curcumin-sensitized titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticles. A one-pot, three-component reaction involving aldehydes, urea/thiourea, and dimedone was utilized to efficiently produce quinazoline compounds. The photocatalytic performance of curcumin-sensitized TiO (Cur-TiO) was compared to pure TiO (P-TiO), with Cur-TiO showing significantly enhanced activity.
